The film "My Left Foot" was released in 1989 and starred Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker. Between them they won Oscar's for their performances. The director was Jim Sheridan who also produced "In The Name of the Father" and "In America".
The film itself is based on the autobiography by Christy Brown. Christy Brown was born to a large catholic Irish family in 1932. He was born into a loving family who were also poor, and loyal. His father; played by Ray McAnally; headbutts a customer in the public bar for even dare suggest his ability to have children was over, or that his child would go in a home because he was disabled. Christy had Cerebral Palsy, and his real physical body strength was more or less completely in his left foot. His parents wouldn't have known what the disability was until much later, but they refused to let him ...
Advantages: Inspirational autobiography, written before everyone else wrote their autobiographies! Disadvantages: None really, but could have said a bit at the end about what happened next?
!). And unfortunately I found that the happy ever after that I had hoped for and was very much implied in both the book and (particularly) the film, was not how it really ended. Christy Brown married Mary Carr in 1972. He wrote a number of books and poetry collections. Unfortunately he died in 1981 at the early age of 49 (he choked on a lamb chop). There are questions over his relationship with his wife who has been described as an ex-prostitute alcoholic and it has been suggested that she neglected him, and also that he became an alcoholic.
Obviously only those involved really know what happened. However, it did put a bit of a dampener on it for me, as it was otherwise a truly inspirational story. Of course though life doesn?t always end happily even when we most want it to.

GETTING THERE:
Amsterdam is a hub for connecting flights and therefore lots of UK airports fly there. I looked for a flight from Cardiff with KLM (to get my airmiles!) but it was over £100. I checked with Easyjet from Bristol and they only charged £70 return - that's better! The airlines and airports which fly there are too numerous to list but shop around and you can find good bargains. Remember that using KLM to connect from Amsterdam may be cheaper, but a ticket just to Amsterdam can sometimes almost be as expensive as one that will take you all the way to New York via Schphol.
TRANSPORT ONCE THERE:
I found the transport very good. The odd train was delayed slightly but living in Britain I expect nothing less! The trains from the airport go every 10 minutes and cost 3.60 Euros one way. The station is located ...

The New Amsterdams: William Belzer, Eric McCann, Dustin Kinsey, Jason Rich, Erin Wight, Chris Leopold, Jessie Henkensiefken, Hannah Kendle, Laurel Mergan, Ryan Heinlein, Matthew Pryor. The 2005 demise of the revered emo act the Get Up Kids signaled a flurry of activity for singer/guitarist Matthew Pryor, including two albums with the New Amsterdams (one shelved but finally issued in '07) and a children's record under the guise of the Terrible Twos. AT THE FOOT OF MY RIVAL, the third New Amsterdams outing, shows that Pryor has decided to make the band his main focus, as evidenced on bright, melodic indie-rock tunes such as "A Beacon in the Beige" and "Without a Sound (Eleanor)."
Album Reviews
Alternative Press (p.177) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's Pryor's intimacy and the liberties he takes with wide open spaces that thrust this album into an altogether modern realm."
