taken by Adderley when he left the company for Capitol in 1963. For a time it was available in the 1990s on Landmark records, producer Orrin Keepnews's label, but this is its first CD release in Britain. On an album with already generous playing time by vinyl standards, there is an extra track, a workout on Tadd Dameron's "Our Delight". That apart, this was a popular record in its day, bringing to Adderley's fans their first recordings by the quintet of "Work Song" and "Sack O'Woe", two of their biggest early hits. ("Work Song" first appeared on brother Nat's eponymous Riverside album just before this). Cannon is his usual imperious self, that beautiful, buoyant tone helping his improvisations glide along. Nat, as always, is less perfect but more fiery, giving the partnership his own special sensibility. The superb bass and drums of Sam Jones and Louis Hayes is given a special lift by the new arrival of Victor Feldman on piano. The audience is quiet (hooray!), Cannon is urbane in his announcements and the recording quality is, for its age, spot-on. --Keith Shadwick
Album Notes: Cannonball Adderley Quintet: Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (alto saxophone); Nat Adderley (cornet); Victor Feldman (piano); Sam Jones (bass); Louis Hayes (drums).
...Kind of Blue might have received most of the acclaim but Milestones, the recorded debut of the Miles Davis Sextet, is in the same league. This remarkable super group (featuring Davis's trumpet, tenor-saxophonist John Coltrane, altoist CannonballAdderley, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones) was arguably the greatest one Miles Davis ever led. "Two Bass Hit" features the two saxes trading off with fire and "Billy Boy" showcases the Red Garland trio (showing what they learned from Ahmad Jamal), but "Straight No Chaser" really demonstrates what a powerhouse band this was....

Advantages: Outrageously good! Music, playing, production, booklet - everything is great! Disadvantages: I honestly can't think of one thing.
...'Milestones' is just that - a landmark in jazz. Recorded the year before the classic 'Kind Of Blue', this is the record that started it all. It is remembered as Miles' first conceptual use of modal jazz, despite the fact that the blues dominate the album. However, this is no kind of blue - this is a frenzy of white hot hard bop action.
The personnel list for the album is similar to 'Kind Of Blue', with Coltrane on tenor sax, CannonballAdderley on alto sax and Paul Chambers on bass all joining Miles on both albums. However, Red Garland on piano and Philly Joe Jones, who appear on 'Milestones', were replaced by Wynton Kelly and Bill Evans on piano, and Jimmy Cobb on drums by the time 'Kind Of Blue' was recorded.

Advantages: All your fave Tribe Tracks Disadvantages: None!
...from The Land Where Hip-Hop And Jazz Live.
After releasing four albums, A Tribe Called Quest finally decides to put an end to their legacy. However, with The Love Movement, they definitely ended it on a good note. As usual, Q-Tip is the lyrical fronteer, but Phife comes up with some good lyrics as well. Very nice production done by The Ummah. Also, the great single "Find A Way" has one of the jazzy, noble beats that made the Tribe famous on their previous albums. "Da Booty" has a cool up-tempo beat and Q-Tip and Phife go back and forth nicely. "Steppin' It Up" features Redman and Busta Rhymes, and is a crazy track, with a CannonballAdderley sample. Every emcee rips the mic on this song, but Redman steals the show with a hilarious verse. Then you have more laid-back tunes like "Like It Like That", which has a slow guitar loop and Q...
