Advantages: Good cross section of artist work Disadvantages: not to everyones tastes
...A cracking album from one of the u.k top folk artists. This album shows a true cross section of work from Bert's repertoire. Personally, i like every track on the album and as a fellow musician Bert's arrangements are exceptionally good and complex! There are the traditional tracks like "Black waterside" (Led Zeplin used Bert's arrangement for one of their own tracks,) aswell as reading of "Nottamun Town" and the murder ballad "Bruton Town."
If you like your english folk music then you can't go wrong with one of the best examples of folk guitar. This album is a mixture of self-penned songs, trad folk and examples of the tunes that were taken into his band The Pentangle.
I have been a fan of Bert's for years and this album is one of the best examples of his career spanning the last 40 yrs....

Advantages: Many excellent songs, wonderful poetic lyrics, great voices Disadvantages: A couple of weaker songs, only seventeen tracks on mine!
...beautiful version of death
But I’m scared to hold you close or smell your breath”
Final Spark is a realistic boy/girl look at marriage, a no holds barred view without any trace of rose-tinted spectacles. This harks back to A Little Time from 1990, but without such a bitter edge. 10,000 Feet is about love and the expectations of both genders – “some women need the proof in every chocolate, every flower”. Up-tempo, catchy, a rather lighter tone than the previous track. Another song that makes good use of Jacqui and Paul’s contrasting voices and another track that is one of the better ones –...

Purrfect Review ofMiaow - Beautiful South (The)by
jamesdean1981
Advantages: Great lyrics and vocals Disadvantages: None
...classics of the South. Often wrongly thought to be called ‘Carry On Regardless’, thanks to the tagline, it’s one of the best songs they’ve ever recorded.
3. Especially For You – thankfully not the Kylie and Jason duet, this is one of the album’s darker moments. Heaton growls his way through the song, injecting it with genuine pathos.
4. Everybody’s Talkin’ – Up until listening to this, I never understood why the South bothered with covers. Against Heaton’s own fantastic lyrics, their recordings of little known songs such as ‘Girlfriend’ and ‘Artificial Flowers’ just seem clumsy. But this is light years ahead of those tracks. Jacqui’s sweet, honey sounding voice could’ve been made for the Nilsson classic, and vice versa. This and the two following...
