Philharmonic (JATP) had been going strong for 14 years. The form has survived and burgeoned to this day and, as can be heard here, it drew in some of the most elegant and tasteful soloists. The two leaders meshed well together and were obviously happy in their work, as both are at their best throughout the 73 minutes on the disc. Johnson had played on the first JATP recordings at a time when he had radically changed the approach to jazz trombone playing. He had sacrificed the full tone possible on the instrument to substitute an agility and speed that matched the saxophone players. Well, almost. For no one could come near to the eloquence of Stan Getz in full flight. The outstanding track has to be his solo feature on "It Never Entered My Mind", one of the classic jazz improvisations. The rhythm section is the Oscar Peterson Trio augmented by drummer Connie Kay. The original LP issue has been augmented by six extra tracks from a second concert. Your collection needs this album. --Steve Voce

Advantages: A great jazz collection Disadvantages: Stan is the only soloist
...I don't know if this album received that much attention when it came out but I've been listening to it lately a lot. I'm a saxophone player, and Getz is not even usually one of my favorites. I always thought his sound was too lightweight or something. The only albums I liked were the early Bossa Nova ones, but not any more. He plays so soulfully on this album, it's like he's literally crying, wailing, and his sound is so beautiful and big and perfect intonation--all the more amazing since he had terminal cancer at the time of the recording. You would never know it. This is a very arranged album with lots of horns and synthesized instruments and percussion and lots of different styles and grooves, but don't let that discourage you because it's very intimate and Stan is the only soloist, blowing all the way through. Occasionally...

Advantages: Robert Johnsons music is showcased by great musicians. Disadvantages: Not all Robert Johnsons songs were covered.
...of how the whole album was made tlaking about set lists, cameramen etc., and showing various studios and personnel, the whole album was recorded live, and this section ends with all involved having their photograph taken. The whole dvd was filmed in London and Dallas during tour rehearsals.
The rest of the dvd is in four sessions hence the title.
Session 1 is the Full Band playing at Hook End Manor, Checkendon England
Kind Hearted Woman, They're Red Hot, Sweet Home Chicago and When You Got a Good Friend
Session 2 is the Full Band playing at the Studios, Las Colinas, Irving, Texas
Milkcow's Calf Blues, If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day, Stop Breakin' Down Blues, Travelling Riverside Blues
Session 3 is Eric and Doyle playing accoustic with Eric on vocals at 508 Dallas Park Texas, Robert Johnson made some of his final recordings...

Advantages: Haunting lyrics and soulful singing Disadvantages: Only 35 minutes long :(
...This album is Antony and the Johnsons first album and is self titled Antony and the Johsons. macca8100 wrote about their second album 'I am a bird now' which is also excellent as macca pointed out.
I feel that I should give a review of their first album because I don't think it is as well known as their followup, possibly due to their second one winning them their mercury music award and being as it is full of guest stars (Lou Reed, Boy George, Devendra Banhart and Rufus Wainright) which certainly lent it some musical authenticity that allowed him to break in to the british market (even though he is british he lives in america and started his career there).
The track list for Anthony and the Johnsons is:
1. Twilight
2. Cripple and the Starfish
3. Hitler In My Heart
4. The Atrocities
5. River of Sorrow
6. Rapture
7. Deeper Than Love...
