...The second album was recorded during the bands 1969 tour. The recording sessions were fragmented over a variety of locations. Page produced this album well and the end result sounds very coherent. "Whole Lotta Love" was based on a Willie Dixon song "You Need Love". Robert Plant emerged as the groups lyricist with the dreamy "What Is And What Should Never Be", and the love song "Thank You" and the Tolkien inspired "Ramble On". Moby Dick is one of the few listenable drum solos ever recorded. 'Livin Lover Maid' is a good rock song but not one of the groups favourites. Heartbreaker is one of Page's greatest guitar works.... They found they had a similar taste in music & ideas & it wasn't long before they secured a job at Dick James Music in London who hired them for writing songs for established artists such as Lulu, Cilla Black & Englebert Humperdinck. Dick James was already the music publisher for the Beatles administered through Northern Songs. Problem was Elton & Bernie's songs were simply not commercial enough but in 1968 they penned a song for themselves called 'I've Been Loving You' which was released on the Phillips label but failed to enter the UK charts. They tried again in 1969 with 'Lady Samantha' but it too failed to make any impressions. In 1969 one of their songs was submitted for the Eurovision song contest which would be performed by Lulu. ...for John Peel's programme "Top Gear" from February 1969. 21, 22 were a session recorded for the BBC programme "The Tony Brandon Show" in April 1969. THE TECHNOLOGY As before I now have copies of both versions of this album in my collection. The disc is a dual layer hybrid CD. The universally accessible layer contains the Stereo CD mix. I have to admit that even this version played into the inputs of a Dolby 5:1 capable amplifier produces a remarkable clarity of sound and a pleasing three dimensional ambiance to the performance. My current equipment, a Denon 2800 player, is not equipped with SACD circuitry. The SACD layer has the version from the 1972 quadraphonic master tapes remixed into a full surround sound output.
