Stones song "Just Wanna See His Face" will know what to expect here; that is to say adding gospel fervour into rock n roll songs and lifting them to a higher plane. Putting Jagger and co firmly to shame in terms of longevity (the Blind Boys have been around in some form since the 40s,with leader Clarence Fountain helming the group since it's inception),Atom Bombexudes the same passionate-sound of their celebratedSpirit of the CenturyLP- if it ain't broke, don't fix it.Covering everything from Cold-War paranoia (the title track) through otherwise-cheesy pop tunes ("Spirit in the Sky", sounding as good as it's ever going to get) to an appropriation modern hip hop in "Demons", the group achieve a perfect balancing act of novelty and widespread appeal. Along the way, they even succeed in breathing life into some gospel classics- just take a listen to "Presence of the Lord". Like Johnny Cash whose later recordings trod the same tightrope, the group succeed without compromising their integrity or passion, and the accessibility of the album should ensure that it will reach a wider audience.--Thom Allott

Advantages: Warms the cockles of your soul Disadvantages: You need a soul in the first place
As the winter months draw in it?s good to tuck oneself on bed with a flask, in a wood cabin, and authentic Deep South gospel blues to warm the cockles of the heart.
This year my musical and spiritual heat is being provided by the soulful hauntings of Ben Harper and The BlindBoys of Alabama with There Will Be A Light.
We are hearing the union of a combination of artists at their peak. The BlindBoys bring the raw Negro Spiritual tradition and decades of blended hymnal harmonising.
Harper and his band bring the stripped down arrangements to vocals aged in oak caskets for generations, soaking up decades and life experience.
As you expect there is variety without vanity. The lonely slide guitar in Dylan cover Well, Well, Well seems to be fighting for empathy whereas accapella lament Mother Pray is touching enough to bring ...
I am not a religious man (far from it) and am no follower of gospel music but having come across the blid boys of alabamas Spirit of the Century album I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one.
THere is no doubt that this is another fine album full of wonderful vocals. As with Spirit of the century the blindboys have been teamed up with another great set of backing musicians, although I must admit i do miss Danny Thompsons excellent bass playing which was an outstanding feature of the previous album.
There is a good range of songs on this album which show up the beauty of the singing and playing.
Even if like me you would never normall consider a gospel album this is well worth buying and if you have never heard spirit of the century you MUST get that album tha treally is essential listening
U GOTTA LOVE IT ...
Advantages: It's U2 Disadvantages: Some weaker tracks
has taken a step back -and by no means a bad one at that. The album doesn't skim on production but it's perhaps the back to basic approach to it that makes the album work. Go back and look at how raw their early stuff are and in places on AtomicBomb you can see how over the years U2 have built on this. The Boys might be older and slightly greyer if you take a look at the photo's on the accompanied booklet but they still know how to belt 'em out with the best of them. AtomicBomb isn't some arty experimental album it's about getting back to playing pure rock with guitar riffs to die for, Bono belting them out like the pro he is and imagining you're in a stadium someplace singing along! Yes in places it sounds grandiose, but the grittiness that made U2 is still there. The album takes on the usual U2 material of politics, love, spirituality ...

Album Notes
Blind Boys Of Alabama: Clarence Fountain, Jimmy Carter, George Scott, Bobby Butler, Ricky McKinnie, Joey Williams (vocals); Tracy Pierce (bass instrument). Additional personnel: The Gift Of Gab (rap vocals); David Hildago (guitar); Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica); Billy Preston (piano, organ). Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California; Pacifica Studios, Los Angeles, California. Fans of the stellar, down-home harmonizing of the Blind Boys of Alabama won't be disappointed by 2005's ATOM BOMB. The opening track, entitled "(Jesus Hits Like the) Atom Bomb," features the group's airtight vocalizing accompanied only by the spare, insistent bass pulse and brushes on a snare. Despite its topical lyrics, the song cuts straight back to the gospel hymns and field hollers of the rural south in the 1920s and '30s. Yet the Blind Boys are no museum artifacts, as "Demons," the album's second track, proves. Here guest star the Gift of Gab unfurls his verbally agile rap flow over a chugging groove, while the Boys' back-up vocals ebb and flow. The Blind Boys show a special talent for bringing their church-like flair to material from the rock era, including a simmering rendition of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" and an organ-drenched take on Eric Clapton's "Presence of the Lord." Yet the Blind Boys never lose track of their true roots. Their versions of old-school gospel tunes ("Talk About Suffering" and "Old Blind Barnabas") sound suitable for the ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC, if not for the slinky blues instrumentation and high-end production. Outstanding musicianship from keyboardist Billy Preston, harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite, and guitarist David Hidalgo (of Los Lobos) adds a special sheen to ATOM BOMB, another winning disc from these gospel legends.
