Heart Mother takes as its title an inscrutable phrase and under the title launches a similarly inscrutable--or at least dense--musical concatenation. The title suite features French-horn-led brass melodies riffed on by David Gilmour's guitar and the rhythm section, all of which veers into choral passages that recall György Ligeti's vocal works and then almost atonal pulses of keyboards that mask reams of audio snippets swirling underneath. There's some moody folk from Roger Waters, an almost Kinks-ish rambler from Richard Wright, then more moody folk (this time from Gilmour) on "Fat Old Sun" and, to close, the spirited melodic runaround of "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast". Pink Floyd offers a range of emotion here, from doleful to crazed to humorous (especially the dramatised comments on macrobiotics in the closer). Atom Heart Mother was a spotlight ahead for Pink Floyd, showing the extensions of form the band would engage in so successfully on Dark Side of the Moon just a few short years later. --Andrew Bartlett
Advantages: Ground breaking, unique Disadvantages: not a good background music CD
...at the gates of dawn’
Atom Heart Mother is a wonderfully engineered Album, bringing together, vocals, piano, keyboards, synthesisers, drums and lots more which will be explained as I go through the tracks! The album for me means a lot – it is a fantastic ‘listening to’ CD but crap ‘background music’ I love to listen to it quite loud in a darkened room with a few beers and let the music take me on its journey, and what a journey it is, it takes me ... ...bit about each one:

Sub headed into the following:

Advantages: Has an orchestral slash psychadelia mix which is unique to pink floyd Disadvantages: First track is Pink floyd's longest and is long winded, may drive people crazy if you sat them down an forced them to listen to the opening track for half an hour
...money back.
ATOM HEART MOTHER- The opening track is about 30 seconds longer than echoes on MEDDLE the later albumn making it Pink Floyds longest studio song.It is divided into 5 parts which are based supposedly around the experiences of a cow but is hard to believe.A vast rushing array of instruments and sound effects including piano, trumpet, trombone, french horn and of couse a backing strings orchestra of violins and chellos through certain patches ... ...used to and patience but is a very rare treat of easy soothing listening, i think Roger Waters has his best Bass guitar work ever here it's very deep and thumping and blends well with the orhestra. The weak points of this track are the lengh and unfortunately there is an area in the track which contains a very anoying sound effect like a windcreen wiper rubbing back and forth i usually fing i have to fast forward past this bit as it is so anoying. On ...

Possibly the oddest album ever to top the charts, this opus consists of a 23-minute tune, complete with grandiose horns in the form of the title track. On top of this, add one effort from each songwriting-singing Floyd and a less than essential three-part track, interspersed with the sounds of a roadie having breakfast, and you have an album you`ll either love or hate. It is personally one of my favourites, and I cannot get enough of the title track ... ...I also think that Rick Wright`s `Summer `68` and David Gilmour`s `Fat Old Sun` are some of their best efforts ever. However, a lot of people (Pink Floyd included) do not agree with me and see it as very self indulgent and boring. My advice would be to give it a go - you may be pleasantly surprised. ...

...capabilities of Pink Floyd:
Atom Heart Mother provides a stunning colabiration between soft rock and the honest style of classical and progressive music.
Despite being blaitantly contrasting to earlier efforts from Pink Floyd (i.e. Relics, the acid induced trip through seemingly random, but clearly well structured music in the form of a debut album), this change in "genre" has allowed Pink Floyd to develop their style to an extent whereby they ... ...though, the good points to Atom Heart Mother outweigh the bad points, and although it can get a bit cyclic, and lacks some of the energy that Syd Barret would have no doubt bought to the record, it does provide an ejoyable 52mins.
