Advantages: Originality, great musicianship Disadvantages: Not that memorable, stronger Basie albums elsewhere
When thinking through covers of famous songs the concept of this album would not be the first to spring to mind. A big band, swinging jazz rendition of some of the Beatles finest hits.
In reviewing this album I can't speak for fans of the Beatles. Whilst recognising the musicianship of the Beatles they have never been part of my musical 'taste' . So I'm interested to know - does this come across as a suitable tribute, from one great artist to another? Can the music of the Beatles ever hope to remain great when reworked in this way?
As for me, well I love it, in concept at least. CountBasie never fails to provide the most fulfilling big band sound. With this album I can at least try to appreciate the music of a band that otherwise I would steer clear of.
Personal favourites from this collection are 'Yesterday' - a high-tempo all ...

The Atomic Brain
=
Ok the plot line on this movie is a bit weird so stay with me.
Brilliant scientist, Otto Frank is experimenting with Atomic power and all its various uses. He harnesses its potential and soon realises that it can be used in transplanting the human brain from one body to another.
Enter his wife into the story, Hetty, she is a self obsessed and aging old woman. The only reason that Otto is with her is that she is funding his research. Now she intends to collect on her investment.
She hires three housekeepers / domestics. Anita is a stunning and beautiful Mexican. Next is Bea a British beauty and lastly plain but nice Austrian Nina.
She has the evil idea to transplant her brain from her old decrepit body and into one of their bodies.
Who will she choose? How will she kill that one and will her ...

Advantages: Bond and Basie, together! Disadvantages: No vocals, no new rearrangements
Few films have had such an impact as those featuring 007 himself. And this impact extends into the musical world. The instantly recognisable themes that have accompanied James Bond's exploits owe as much to the musical credentials of the artists as to the fame of the films themselves.
At first the thought of 'replaying' these numbers in a jazz style may seem like sacrilege. But considering the fact that CountBasie, one of the greatest jazz pianists, composers and conductors ever, is at the helm, we can rest assured in the ability of the musicianship. Further, the very nature of the tracks chosen make their 'jazzing up' a not unachieveable goal.
Throughout the album the instrumentation is of the highest quality. Strong solos and improvisation are supported by delicate and subtle backing from the Count and the rest of his orchestra. The ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Count Basie (piano); Joe Williams (vocals); Wendell Culley, Snooky Young, Thad Jones, Joe Newman (trumpet); Henry Coker, Al Grey, Benny Powell (trombone); Marshall Royal, Frank Wess, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Frank Foster, Charles Fowlkes (reeds); Freddie Green (guitar); Eddie Jones (bass); Sonny Payne (drums). Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Capitol Studios, New York, New York between October 21 & 22, 1957. Includes liner by Barry Ulanov & Michael Cuscuna. This 1957 release features Neal Hefti's arrangements and the ever-exciting sound of what became known as the Second Testament Basie Band (the first having featured Lester Young, Herschel Evans, Dicky Wells et al). The album opens with a fiery version of "The Kid from Red Bank"; other highlights include "Whirly-Bird" and "Teddy the Toad." As usual, Count Basie's stride-inflected piano style and the brass section's sudden, sharp stabs help define the band's sound. The COMPLETE ATOMIC BASIE isn't just about screaming high notes and blistering scale flourishes though; subtlety and dynamic variety characterize several charts. We hear this best in the reeds' lilting swing on "Midnite Blue," and in the quiet, mellow groove of "Li'l Darlin'"; the sparseness of the latter's arrangement highlights the often-neglected guitarist Freddie Green's inimitable strumming. One of Basie's finest albums, THE COMPLETE ATOMIC BASIE is a swinging gem.
