Of all the two-piece rock bands (Dresden Dolls, The White Stripes, The Kills, John & Jehn) ... more
out there making a royal racket, The Black Keys are by far the least affected by the last three decades of popular music, and evolution. Even more so than Jack & Meg. Which makes you check the album credits twice and then seek a second opinion--produced by celebrated uber-producer, superstar DJ and one half of Gnarls Barkley, the ubiquitous and really quite modern Danger Mouse?! No, your eyes do not deceive you, but thankfully neither do your ears. He may have brought a discipline and expensive sheen to Attack & Release, the riffing is buffed up real good, but this is essentially the same band that continues to live less of a life and more a Jimi Hendrix Experience. If there is a change it's that for the first time their foot is teased off the accelerator, with "Lies", "Remember When (Side A)" and "Oceans & Streams" loosening their shoulders and playing a more chilled brand of dusty sunset southern blues, adding in keys and new layers of texture (is that really a flute on "Same Old Thing"?!). There's still plenty of chance, on the massive Zeppelin-esque "Strange Times" and "Remember When (Side B)" for instance, to leave a boot mark though. More release than attack this time around, but the key still fits. --James Berry

another blast of rootsy, bluesy and gutsy songs on eager fans. In a departure from usual form, the duo drafted in Danger Mouse to produce the record, lending the sound a comparably polished quality not present on previous outings. Indeed, 'Attack And Release' is the first Black Keys album to be recorded in a professional studio. Furthermore, 'Things Ain't What They Used To Be' features a duet with country singer Jessica Lea Mayfield. Includes the single 'Strange Times'.

Advantages: Stacks upon stacks of extra features. Disadvantages: Unecessary inclusion of 4:3 ratio version.
Now, Men in Black was already a superb film. What has always been good about it is it's perfect suitability to just plonk yourself down and watch it on the spur of the moment.
With the incredible amount of extra features included on this DVD you will be plonking yourself down for a considerable time to come.
All of the features are perfectly matched to the style of the film. My particular favourites are the out-takes (an excellent one involving the out of control ball seen - without the ball) and the scene editing workshop. At least you can have a go at putting a film together.
My only criticism is that the whole DVD fills you with a feeling of greed and you can't help but want more. ...
Advantages: Soulful, unique Disadvantages: Need a change of pace
The second I heard that this album was produced by the eminent DJ Danger Mouse (behind music by Gnarles Barkley and the Gorillaz), I knew that it was more than just another two-piece garage rock band. Staying true to their bluesy roots, they manage to evade any influence from the synth-propelled music so ubiquitous today. In a way, this lack of extra oomph left me wanting; however, this really is an excellent purchase. You just kind of have to take it for what it is: a hearkening back to the days of Zeppelin and Hendrix, with a slight drop into the repetitive at times. There are glimmers of brilliance here that offer an invigorating mixture of psychedelic kick with a contemporary feel. The BlackKeys are truly a revelation. They just need to step things up a notch.
Highlights of the album:
#Psychotic Girl
#Strange Times
#Remember ...
Advantages: Believable, good acting and direction Disadvantages: Limited due to simple plot
is very subtle, as the focus is very much on the sci-fi aspect of the creatures and the danger the dark palces the survivors in.
My Opinion
This is a very well worked film, with a good but basic plot involving all characters in equal measure. The scenes are amazingly filmed, and the special effects guys have definitely done their job. Director David Twohy has done his job perfectly here, providing the right atmosphere all the way through. The tagline 'Fight evil with evil' fits the bill.
Conclusion
A very good film, with a convincing anti-hero in the form of Riddick.
The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.98 new, £0.90 used.
