August and everything After sits comfortably in my top five favourite albums of all time. For your own interest and to show the quality of this superb album, my list reads:
1) OK Computer, Radiohead 2) Counting Crows: August and everything After 3) The bends, Radiohead 4) Manic Street Preachers: The holy bible 5) Defnitely Maybe: Oasis
This album is immense and actually the only album other than OK computer which I don't skip a song. So why is it so good? Well its perfect in everyway. They always say the key to a good album is a good entrance, if thats true, Round Here (Song 1) fulfills every criteria
This song is faultless, the moody introduction of the Hammond organ sets a stunning resonance to which an uncomplicated but beautiful guitar line comes in, your left hanging for a few seconds until the distinctive Adam Duritz (lead singer) catapaults you into his story of love and regret...............
"Step out the front door like a ghost/Into the fog where no one notices/The contrast of white on white/And in between the moon and you/The angels get a better view/Of the crumbling difference between wrong and right."
As the lyrics weave they're spell, your cast along for the ride, helpless against the poetic and vunrable sounding Duritz. In one foul swoop, you've just fallen in love with this album and your only one song in!
your then taken for a ride through upbeat American Folk with the soulfoul Omaha and then the catchy Mr Jones. This song is an anthem and will be your song for the summer or Winter, infact come to think of it you will probably be humming this all year round.
The problem you'll already be finding is, each of the first three songs are totally different from one another so which genre of music do Counting Crows fit into.
While you ponder this, the rest of the album will be seducing you, with the sadly tinged "perfect Blue Buildings" and "sullivan Street" and the more uplifting and hopeful "Rain King".
Music should evoke the senses whether that be happy / sad / energising / mellow. This album touches all of those leaving you feeling slightly more complete than when you started. Give this album a try, you will I guarantee, not regret a moment of it.

Advantages: Great songs, great to sing to, great to play to and rocks version of easy listening. Disadvantages: A bit dark and depressed in places but moreover suffering from a lack of warmth, but only in the recording.
Advantages: Beautiful lyrics, beautiful melodies. Gets right under your skin and into your heart. Disadvantages: Can become sullen and monotone for those who don't like slowpaced songs.
