Album Reviews: Entertainment Weekly (p.64) - "[T]hey're super-melodic....Vocalist M. Shadows growl-howls excellently, and the hooky musicianship is unimpeachable." -- Grade: B
Advantages: 4th in the series, and better than ever! also self produced! Disadvantages: only 10 tracks, although length is good
...The latest album by avengedsevenfold. This is a self produced album, which means there are not limits on what these guys have produced, its what they want you to hear, not somebody else's view. This is a very new album, and one which i anticipated highly. It has 10 tracks, and is quite short, which i did find slightly disappointed at first glance. However once i played the tracks, i was shocked at how good it was. The songs vary in many ways, from being quite heavy, to being slow and more melodic. Some songs have a sort of random feel to them, others have a deep meaning just like in previous albums. Lead vocalist M. Shadows has become even better as far as I've heard, also the backing vocals in 'Critical Acclaim' and 'A little piece of heaven' Are a much appreciated addition to the line up. This album is nothing short of a masterpiece...

Advantages: Rock (real) / rock / rock / genius Disadvantages: the band don't get the appreciation they deserve! / lyrics are fantasy horror (may offend people)
...I am not going to simply repeat whats in the other reviews, but I don't think it has been made clear how awesome this album is! In my opinion (and thousands of others), Avengedsevenfold album 'city of evil' is groundbreaking, not just in its musical standard but in its heart the revival of heavy metal and rock music. There are so many bands like coldplay, killers, kooks, all thoroughly decent bands, but the fact remains they are not rock stars. They don't play from the heart and go out to kick ass, avengedsevenfold do this mercifully!
Having brought there other album waking the falling it is apparently clear what Matt Shadows and his cronies have set out to do when forming avengedsevenfold. Bring rock back to the masses. The Beast and the Harlot does this in bucketfulls!
Burn it down and seize the day are both outstanding...

Advantages: Retains the strong metal finish for old school fans Disadvantages: Perhaps could have used a little more typical metal hate in a few songs
...Members:
M. Shadows - Vocals
Zacky Vengeance - Rhythm Guitar
Synyster Gates - Lead Guitar
The Reverend Tholomew Plague AKA 'The Rev' - Drums
Jonny Christ - Bass
With names like that who wouldnt like them?
AvengedSevenfolds earlier releases chronicled personal pain and evil bible stories through the use of harmonised guitar riffs and strong vocal screaming. This album is now a far cry from that.
They have songs detailing their personal political views such as 'Critical Acclaim' and also songs reflecting their own feelings such as 'Afterlife' and 'Dear God, and also for the hardcore amongst us, a Tim Burton-Esque song called 'A Little Piece of Heaven'
This album has and will continue to impress people from all musical backgrounds. Influences of punk, hip hop and even country are widely used to avoid falling in the trap...
