They've been touted as a modern day Lynard Skynard, a saviour to Southern rock and an antidote to all the preppy pop-punk bands about today, but still, very few know of the existence of 3 Doors Down. The Mississippi rockers, who've torn up the US singles charts on many an occasion since releasing their debut 'Kryptonite' in 2000, are a fairly unknown quantity in the UK, yet it's safe to say they're the only genuine 'rock' band that I love. Debut album 'The Better Life' showed glimpses of a real talent, with tracks such as the previously mentioned 'Kryptonite' and 'Be Like That' becoming massive radio hits all across the States, slowly gaining the band a fan base. The band built on their debut over the ensuing two years before releasing the dreaded sophomore effort 'Away From The Sun', an album that was instantly panned by critics as being generic 'seen-it-before' middle of the road rock music that a trained monkey could have made - truth be told, who cares what the critics think. Personally, 'Away From The Sun' is as genuine a rock record as you're likely to see from a supposedly modern band, mixing Brad Arnold's sublime vocals with a far more mature lyrical style - and no-one, not even the critics, will budge me on that.
'When I'm Gone' kicks off proceedings, the smash hit single and its gorgeous opening chords are supplemented by Arnold's strong vocals and lyrical sense - "So hold me when I'm here, Right me when I'm wrong. Hold me when I'm scared, And love me when I'm gone" - It talks of being wanted, wanting to be loved and yearning for 'that' someone to appreciate and care for you. It's often said that a band's success can come down to the quality of their lyrics, and in Brad Arnold, a man in his early 30's, 3 Doors Down have someone who knows how to write. Not does he write of his past relationships, filling them with teen angst and depression, rather he writes maturely of the same subjects, fronting a band with the talent to carry off his work and making them their own success story. Whether it be title track 'Away From The Sun' (It's down to this, I've got to make this life make sense, Can anyone tell what I've done) or the electric 'Ticket To Heaven' (And soft voices lie, innocence dies, now ain't that a shame), Arnolds lyrics shine through continually as a perfect example to any young 'rocker' of how it should be done (ref Good Charlotte, how not to do it).
'The Road I'm On' is nothing short of amazing, a chorus that could never be forgotten with some of the best guitar work I've personally ever heard - "And I know you feel helpless now, and I know you feel alone. That's the same road, and the same road that I'm on, yeah" - we're I to single out a track for praise, that'd be it. Chris Henderson, the bands lead guitarist, is nothing shy of exceptional throughout the album, incorporating riff upon riff, and throwing in the odd solo for good measure - crank it up and let your ears bleed. 'Running Out Of Days' opens with another superb guitar intro, with drummer Daniel Adair pounding along, it leads nicely into the first 'ballad' of the album, the smash hit, hugely successful 'Here Without You'. "I'm here without you baby, but you're still on my lonely mind. I think about you baby, and I dream about you all the time" - simply put, it's a beautiful song fitting of it's Stateside success. It is, to be honest, the track that got me into the band, as anyone who knows me will know I'm an absolute sap for a ballad and 'Here Without You' is simply one of the finest I've heard.
The crunching 'I Feel You' picks the albums momentum back up, with one mother of a chorus that would get the sleepiest soul singing alone. Again, it covers Arnold's tales of relationships, be it positive or negative - "And what do I get, to get me through these sleepless nights? And what do I have to hold, when no one's there to hold me tight?" - the band sneak the lyrics 'Another 700 Miles' into the track, which coincidentally became the title of their latter released live EP in 2003 (some pointless trivia there), but a live EP that knocked the socks of my dad, and that takes a lot, believe me. Anyway, back to the album and the superb 'Dangerous Game', another stunning 3 minutes of rock (and lyrical) perfection from these fine Southern rockers - "What will we do? What will we say? When it's the end of this game that we play? Will we crumble into the dust my friend? Or will we start this game over again?" - It's the first song that really asks questions, possibly showing Arnold's indecision for the first time, but as trivial as that is, it's one of the albums moments that I'd be inclined to push aside, especially when considered the epic 'Changes' and 'Going Down In Flames' that soon follow.
"I'm not supposed to be scared of anything, But I don't know where I am. I wish that I could move but I'm exhausted, And nobody understands" - 'Changes' shows the first inkling of negative thought, in that negativities come from any 'change', hence the track title. It basically talks of change, and how said change can effect everybody in both positive and negative ways. 'Going Down In Flames' is another great rock 'n' roll moment, moments which are to be found scattered throughout the entirety of 'Away From The Sun'. It's effectively a moment of 'don't' bother me', don't tell me what I really don't want to know and don't tell me what you know I don't want to hear - "Don't tell me how life is, Cause I don't really want to know. Don't tell me how this game ends, Cause we'll just see how it goes" - Arnold is simply saying, let's see what happens, as opposed to let's become intent to ruin what hasn't begun. The official closer is the effective 'Sarah Yellin' (some may know why I love that title, but most won't). It's one of the more driven moments truth be told, with a huge focus on the effects to Arnold's voice, a voice that once again hit's the spot perfectly - "She says, I've got something to say, She knows, That what she says will change everything. She's laid, Through to many sleepless nights, She's cryin, She's cryin, She's cryin".
Two 'bonus' tracks are incorporated into the UK version of the album, the rather tame 'Popsong', and the bands debut single 'Kryptonite'. The reappearance of Kryptonite in itself comes across as a little pointless, but still, it's a pleasure to listen to through whatever means ("If I go crazy then will you still call me Superman? If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand? I'll keep you by my side with my superhuman might? Kryptonite"). 'Popsong' " is, truth be told, not that great. It still contains Arnold's stern and strong vocals, but lacks that special something that 'Away From The Sun' has on the whole….. But hey, one slightly lesser moment doesn't detract from a truly superb record. 3DD are a band that will undoubtedly continue to go unknown in the UK, but were I to recommend a reasonably 'new' band to anybody, then it would be 3 Doors Down without qualm. Mixing superb lyrical sensibilities, stunning guitar work, and general love for what they do, all the hallmarks of a great rock band.

Advantages: an easy cd to listen to anywhere Disadvantages: none except why arent they better known
...on repeat as I drive away from my previous job sorry to anyone on the M25 who may have heard my singing along to it!
Unusually for a modern band their lyrics don't feature any swearing which is a refreshing change, the lyrics are all clear and discernable also, none of the shouty screamy 'singing' that is also very popular these days. If you listen to the lyrics in any of the songs then you will find that all make sense and will possibly induce ... ...favourite track on the album is Here Without You, although that is mostly due to it being quite lyrically relevant to the relationship I had with my new boyfriend, and now that track has become relevent again - I won't quote the lyrics as so many have already - suffice to say its a song about a couple who for whatever reason are not able to see each other and want to.
Other stand out tracks are the title track Ticket to heaven, and a track from ...

Away From The Sun Three Doors Down
I have chosen to write a review about this album in particular because not only has it got a personal favourite song on it but Three Doors Down seem to be unknown in the British rock scene and I hope to enlighten you all lol.
Before I review the whole album I have to review one song in particular! "Here Without You"
A hundred days had made me older Since the last time that I saw your pretty face A thousand lights ... ...think it's about someone being away in any shape or form whether it be death, military, road trips, couples separated by one going to college. Anything about separation
I really think this song is fantastic and anyone who has been in a long distance relationship will understand how hard being away from his or her partner is. I was in a long distance relationship around the time I first heard the song and it became "our song" because the lyrics are ...

...gone.
Length 4:20
2. Away From The Sun
A more mellow song, not as rocked out as some of the others on the album. Less use of heavy guitar but the good use of powerful lyrics again doesn't make the track boring.
Lyrics
'Cause now again I've found myself So far down, away from the sun That shines into the darkest place I'm so far down, away from the sun again Away from the sun again Length 3:51
3. Road I'm On
The chorus has the heavy guitars, ... ...is done to draw you into listening to the start then getting into much louder 'shouty' chorus without too much sense of surprise. A good track but not one of my favourites on the album.
Lyrics
And I know you feel helpless now, and I know you feel, alone
Thats the same road, the same road that Im on, yeah
Length 3:59 4. Ticket To Heaven Again, not one of my favourites on the album but regardless, is still a very good display of vocal, musical ...

...type by the second track, Away from the Sun, in which Matt Roberts vocal talents really shine. On the theme of mellow songs Here without you also ranks quite highly, with sublime lyrics, the emotion which comes through this song is outstanding.
Anyway, enough of the soft stuff, this album also has its fair share of heavier songs. Although this tends to be the weaker side of the band in my opinion they are by no means bad. Sarah Yellin' probably ...

Contains an untitled hidden track following "Sarah Yellin'." 3 Doors Down: Brad Arnold (vocals); Matt Roberts, Chris Henderson (guitar); Todd Harrell (bass). Additional personnel includes: Josh Freese (drums). Recorded at London Bridge, Seattle, Washington; Greenhouse, Burnaby, Canada and Ocean Way Studios, Hollywood, California. "When I'm Gone" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. After almost two years of constant touring, 3 Doors Down return as stronger songwriters and equally passionate musicians with AWAY FROM THE SUN. Instantly catchy, singable choruses, as with "When I'm Gone" are emblematic of what thrust their debut album (A BETTER LIFE) into the hearts and minds of rock fans. Hints of a Creed influence peek through on the title track, while an early Pearl Jam vibe permeates "Running Out Of Days." Fans are sure to hold their lighters high overhead for ballads such as "Here Without You." Looking into the credits, Producer Rich Parashar returns to the helm for AWAY WITH THE SUN, with in-demand session drummer Josh Freese pounding out solid grooves.
