its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced? did. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's nonetheless a vital album, containing some of rock's most molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles in The Sand", the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover" and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9", where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes--and "Bold As Love", based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's Electric Ladyland. Hendrix dreamed the impossible and achieved it on his guitar. --David Stubbs

Axis: BoldAsLove with its fantastic spaced-out cover art, showing the band as kind of like Hindu deities (cobras, elephants, kings, girls, firebreathers, the lot) was The JimiHendrixExperience's second release after "Are You Experienced?" in 1966. The passage of time has seen this album somewhat overshadowed by their debut and the later "Electric Ladyland" complete with their no 1 smash single, the famous and totally brilliant Voodoo Chile. But that's getting a bit ahead of ourselves so let's get back to this interesting record which has 13 songs in all and clocks in at a respectable 46 minutes.

Overall: Axis is a great example of JimiHendrix's development in playing and his ideas as it is a much more mature album than his earlier works. It is well worth the money; surprisingly good value.
Full: The JimiHendrixExperience followed up their magical debut with another masterpiece. Axis: BoldAsLove is a psychedelic gem that opens with the bizarre, feedback explosion of "EXP". "Spanish Castle Magic" is a great song with some superb guitar while "Wait Until Tomorrow" has an almost pop sound with a catchy as hell chorus. Mr. Hendrix's music has always had a socially conscious bent, but "If 6 Was 9" is one of his most overt social statements, with its spacey sound and its pro hippie lyrics. The second outing by the JimiHendrixExperience! Its release had to be held back as to not effect the sales of the first album, which was released earlier in the same year. This album is not as hard hitting as the first attempt 'Are you Experienced', which is in my opinion one of the best albums of all time so is hard to follow, but is excellent never the less. Jimi generally takes a more relaxed approach to this album apart from the odd guitar fest like 'Spanish Castle Magic', so the overall effect is a much more relaxed , ambient sound than 'Are You Experienced'. The production is much sweeter too, which gives it a less dirtier sound than the previous incarnation.
