Axis: Bold As Love with its fantastic spaced-out cover art, showing the band as kind of like Hindu deities (cobras, elephants, kings, girls, firebreathers, the lot) was The Jimi Hendrix Experience's second release after "Are You Experienced?" in 1966. The passage of time has seen this album somewhat overshadowed by their debut and the later "Electric Ladyland" complete with their no 1 smash single, the famous and totally brilliant Voodoo Chile. But that's getting a bit ahead of ourselves so let's get back to this interesting record which has 13 songs in all and clocks in at a respectable 46 minutes.
The late 1960's was the era of the power trio, with such bands as Cream, Gun, and the US outfit Mountain playing hard rock with fuzzy guitars and heavy bass rythyms. Indeed the Experience's bassist, Noel Redding, was originally a guitarist and this undoubtedly aided the band in the sense that having an excellent mastery of that instrument he could move along with Hendrix' s sometimes bizarre-yet-effective lead lines. Mitch Mitchell with his solid tight drumming made for a very complimentary rythym section to allow the great Jimi Hendrix free rein to do what he did best, which was to take guitar playing onto another level.
The record starts off really funnily with EXP a spoof radio interview where Mitch Mitchell - speaking in a speeded up voice - introduces a Paul Carouso (actually Jimi) who stops the interview to say "I must get in my spaceship" and then there's a lot of feedback washing around in the speakers before going straight into the jazzy Up From The Skies, which has a nice swingbeat and a smoky Hendrix vocal, one of the lyrics goes "maybe it's just a change of planet" after which he laughs out loud.
Spanish Castle Magic is an upfront hard rock number and finds itself nowadays on a lot of "Best Of" compliations. Propelled along with Mitchell's military medium and some great words like "it'll only take half a day to get there if we go by……..dragonfly" this is a tight rolling three minutes leading into the lighter laid-back vibe of Wait Until Tomorrow with its subject matter of waiting on a lady, topped off with nice percussion and an airy, summer-like guitar line.
The R&B beat of Ain't No Telling feels a bit like filler to me, it's only 1.49 in length and definitely sounds a bit thrown together, with its changes of pace, so it's a bit of a let down really but the next track Little Wing is a nice example of what is now called a power ballad. Aaah must get the lads in the band to learn this, it's a lovely paced effort with a scorching lead heading into the stratosphere that ends it all off. Good song and now onto another well known track of theirs If 6 Was 9, which at over 5 minutes allows Jimi to stretch out and get down and dirty in this classic example of pyschadelia with its screeching lead and tripped out bass/drums middle section, what a record this is and it's worth buying the CD on its own just to hear this.
You Got Me Floating is another straight up rocker with a big chorus and a rather confused ending which lets it down a little but another great song is next; Castles Made Of Sand, which is a mid-paced number with whistful lyrics all about dreams that don't come true, castles made of sand melt into the sea, eventually.......there's some nice shredded guitar effects on this too. Noel Redding leads the band through the basic 4/4 of She's So Fine, which is a rather poor effort and easily the worst song on this collection (sorry Noel) he doesn't have a bad voice but there ya go.......Jimi takes the wheel again for One Rainy Wish, a thoughtful piece with the vocals placed in the middle of the mix, as well as having a big echoing finish. Jimi is often seen as a whacked-out druggie but when you listen to some of his lyrics he had a way of thinking about what he was writing"there you were under a tree of song, in your hand a flower played"......more pyschadelia in the penultimate track Little Miss Lover with its insistent C, C, C, G, G E bassline before it's Bold As Love with a good rising guitar over a lazy bass.....Mitchell leads the band through the scales allowing Jimi to come in with some power chords to end the song, and its mother album, off with terrific phased guitar, something of a novelty in those days.
So all in all Axis: Bold As Love is a good solid album, if you took She's So Fine and Ain't No Telling out of the equation it would be pretty much essential listening; but still it's classic late-1960's hard-pyschadelia and for fans of that golden age of music it's worth getting hold of. The CD I have (US import) was released on MCA in 1997 remastered from the 1967 original vinyl and comes with a good booklet of notes about the making of the record. Bless you Jimi we won't see another like you.
Advantages: Great Album With Some Of His Classic Songs Disadvantages: None
After the huge success of his debut album Are You Experienced, Jimi Hendrix and the rest of the Jimi Hendrix Experience were under pressure to produce again, and of course they did. Coming only half a year after the release of Are You Experienced, comes this more creative and meandering album that tends to be forgotten after the likes of his debut and Electric Ladyland, but it shouldn't be, as this is just as good an addition to the Jimi Hendrix ... ...his lifetime, any album should be snatched up and listened to immediately. The main idea that Jimi came up with for the album, is that he wanted his guitar to sound as if it was being played under water, and in many of the tracks this idea is evident. This is a great album that is often overlooked, but it shouldn't be, as this is an incredible collection of music and any Hendrix fan should own this. Most of you may know the story about the first ...

Be Bold and Buy! Review ofAxis: Bold As Love [Remastered] - Jimi Hendrix Experience (The)by

Advantages: One of the best albums ever made! Disadvantages: Out Shadowed by 'Are You Experienced' but Brilliant Nonetheless
The second outing by the Jimi Hendrix Experience! Its release had to be held back as to not effect the sales of the first album, which was released earlier in the same year. This album is not as hard hitting as the first attempt 'Are you Experienced', which is in my opinion one of the best albums of all time so is hard to follow, but is excellent never the less. Jimi generally takes a more relaxed approach to this album apart from the odd guitar ... ...a much more relaxed , ambient sound than 'Are You Experienced'. The production is much sweeter too, which gives it a less dirtier sound than the previous incarnation. It has a much more hippier way-out sound, which is also reflected in the 'Hindu God' inspired cover. Although this is alleged to be a mistake as Jimi asked for a cover to be designed that reflected his 'Native American Indian' heritage, but the designer mistook this as the 'Indian sub-continent'. ...

...magical debut with another masterpiece. Axis: Bold As Love is a psychedelic gem that opens with the bizarre, feedback explosion of "EXP". "Spanish Castle Magic" is a great song with some superb guitar while "Wait Until Tomorrow" has an almost pop sound with a catchy as hell chorus. Mr. Hendrix's music has always had a socially conscious bent, but "If 6 Was 9" is one of his most overt social statements, with its spacey sound and its pro hippie lyrics. ... ...Of Sand" has a quiet sound with some very poignant lyrics and "She's So Fine" has Mr. Redding's debut as a lead singer. "Little Wing" is a stunning song of power and majesty that has been covered by other guitar greats like Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Song Overview: 1. EXP - Experience Drummer Mitch Mitchell acts as a radio announcer who interviews a "very peculiar looking gentleman who goes by the name of Mr. Paul Carusoe."
2. Up From ...

Unforgettable Experience Review ofAxis: Bold As Love [Remastered] - Jimi Hendrix Experience (The)by

Well what can I say. Basically I'll admit from the outset this is my favourite album of all time. This album has everything - heavy guitars, rock choruses, sweet melodies and insane solos. On less than two of the songs, 'little wing' and 'if six was nine' have been covered by a large number of other artists This album starts with a very strange track called 'EXP' which in terms of feedback guitar playing is truly ridiculous!! This sets the tone for ... ...of a wave from 'Up From the Skies' to 'Ain't no telling' and 'Castles made of sand'. 'Little Wing' one of my all time favourite tracks is absolutely amazing - so melodic and in effect peaceful. 'If Six was nine' is where the heavy guitars come in and the effect is again magnificent. What truly amazes me about this album most of all though is that it was written in 1968 but if you listen to it today it still sounds as fresh and new as at any time ...

Well... wow.. this album is truly overwhelming..
Typically great songs from the man Hendrix, some songs are nice to sing along to, some just to listen to... over all, its pretty damned groovy.
I'll start with the first track "EXP" which is just a bunch of random noises after a very short dialogue about aliens. The noises are very similar to the noise of someone killing an electric guitar.. but it still sounds sort of musical..
"Spanish Castle ... ...course a great musical backing.
"Wait Until Tomorrow" is another good song, very bluesy, and still pretty damned cool.
This album contains the classic "Little Wing" and is it as great now as when it was created. An outstanding blues song, and great lyrics.
Anyone who calls themself a music lover MUST have this amongst their collection, if you don't GO AND GET IT NOW! ...

Album Notes: This 1997 reissue of AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE is a newly remastered version that restores the original album artwork. It includes a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished photos and song lyrics. It is among the first batch of albums on Experience Hendrix, a new label controlled by Hendrix's family. The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, electic guitar); Noel Redding (vocals, bass); Mitch Mitchell (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England. Originally released on Reprise. Includes liner notes by Jym Fahey. AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE was the follow-up to ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?, and represented a much more conscious use of the recording studio's possibilities. Where his live shows continued to showcase the raw rocking power of the Experience, the recording studio gave Hendrix the composer/arranger a broader palette. There are still plenty of powerful blues/rock-inflected songs, such as the menacing "If 6 Was 9," the rolling "Spanish Castle Magic" and the spatial title tune. But "Up From The Skies" is a jazzy trio romp, featuring Hendrix's bluesy, vocalized wah-wah pedal. And on the ballads "Little Wing" and "Castles Made Of Sand," Hendrix shifts the focus from the band to the silvery chord/melody accompaniments he often employed to complement his vocals. They are an orchestral effect unto themselves.
Album Reviews: Q (12/93, p.136) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...AXIS dazzles as the Experience creates a genre probably short-lived because nobody else could play it: jazz metal might be the appropiate tag..." Vibe (2/94, p.103) - "...for folks who've never heard Jimi on vinyl, the rainbow fantasia world of Hendrix awaits you in all its polyphonic peacock glory...." Down Beat (8/97, p.61) - 4 1/2 stars (out of 5) - "...pales only slightly in comparison [to ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?]..."
