Axis: Bold As Love with its fantastic spaced-out cover art, showing the band as kind of like Hindu deities (cobras, elephants, kings, girls, firebreathers, the lot) was The Jimi Hendrix Experience's second release after "Are You Experienced?" in 1966. The passage of time has seen this album somewhat overshadowed by their debut and the later "Electric Ladyland" complete with their no 1 smash single, the famous and totally brilliant Voodoo Chile. But that's getting a bit ahead of ourselves so let's get back to this interesting record which has 13 songs in all and clocks in at a respectable 46 minutes. Axis: Bold As Love A More Mature Album

Advantages: All Of It
Disadvantages: None Of It

Overall: Axis is a great example of Jimi Hendrix's development in playing and his ideas as it is a much more mature album than his earlier works. It is well worth the money; surprisingly good value. Full: The Jimi Hendrix Experience followed up their magical debut with another masterpiece. Axis: Bold As Love is a psychedelic gem that opens with the bizarre, feedback explosion of "EXP". "Spanish Castle Magic" is a great song with some superb guitar while "Wait Until Tomorrow" has an almost pop sound with a catchy as hell chorus. Mr. Hendrix's music has always had a socially conscious bent, but "If 6 Was 9" is one of his most overt social statements, with its spacey sound and its pro hippie lyrics. The Jimi Hendrix Experience Is In Session

Advantages: Re-Recordings Of His Hits, Along With Unique Covers And Songs
Disadvantages: Sound Quality Occasionally Drops, Although Not To Any Great Extent

The sonic guitar makes it sound far dirtier and rough than the original giving it an edge that suited the Experience in terms of energy and arrangement, showing there improvisational skills as well as musical ability. 6. Spanish Castle Magic ***** This version is much rougher and harder the original, reminding me more of the release on the Jimi Hendrix Experience Box Set, which features a studio rendition from about 1969. This may of course simply be due to the lack of effects and production that they had available to them, but I have always though that this suited the song far better, giving the slightly surreal lyrics an extra edge.
