BBC Live And In Session - Motorhead

Advantages: Several cover versions released for the first time

...The Who recorded several sessions for the BBC in their early years. The first-ever one, for the 'Joe Loss Show' of all things (the Queen Mother's favourite bandleader - interesting combination!) has long since been wiped, but luckily the rest of these wscaped a similar fate. There's an interesting balance of the band's own songs, including the hits 'Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere', 'My Generation' (the number itself, plus a jingle for Radio 1 - "Talkin' 'bout my favourite station"), 'Substitute' (two versions) and 'I'm a Boy', as well as album tracks like 'Disguises' and 'Run Run Run', as well as a rare Roger Daltrey composition 'See My Way'. It's interesting to compare these more rough-and-ready versions with the official studio recordings released at the time, when they had the luxury of endless overdubbing and mixing facilities. Advantages: Hey, it's the Beatles!
Disadvantages: Not as polished as later output. Mostly not their own songs.

...First, let me make this clear: I LOVE the Beatles, and although by no means a specialist, I am a big fan. This album is quite different from the rest of the Beatles' albums, as it is not up to their usual studio recorded, very well produced standards. All the tracks were recorded during sessions the band did at the BBC in 1963/65. And while this format often leads to a lack of sound quality (although I guess no-one could have produced this better than George Martin himself), this is more than compensated by the sheer joy of being able to hear the Fab Ones live. We are offered a glimpse of the brilliant live talent we were deprived of by the excesses of Beatlemania. I won't list all the tracks as this double album contains almost 70. Advantages: It's Motorhead - it doesn't get any better than this!
Disadvantages: silly question!

...Over 30 years down the line and still Motorhead and the legendary Lemmy rumble on, producing new music that continues to be among the hardest, rawest and most influential rock music around. Lemmy now famously opens every live gig with the words "We are Motorhead - and we play rock'n'roll". Well, yes... it isn't Elvis or Jerry Lee or what have you, but yes it is still rock'n'roll, with a Motorhead twist. A lot of fans are still stuck in the past with Lemmy and co, and still hark back to the days of the so called classic line up of Lemmy, Eddie Clarke, and Phil Taylor. That was well over 20 years ago. This current line up has been together now since around 1991 and guitarist Phil Campbell has actually been there since 1984, and I'd say THIS is the classic line up, as this album (as well as it's predecessor "Sacrifice" more than prove it...
