...A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO LED ZEPPELIN
It's 1968 - ace session musos Jimmy Page (guitar) and John Paul Jones (bass), at the time the two finest exponents of either instrument - find themselves needing a drummer and singer to form group to complete contractual obligation tour as the New Yardbirds. Enter black country rockers Robert Plant (vocals) and John Bonham (drums) and voila!! Led Zeppelin are born. The most important British group of the late 20th century retire to London to record their debut album, in stereo nonetheless.
THE ALBUM........
Genuine Zepp classic Good Times Bad Times gets the ball rolling, blues/rock until the bridge, "ah suck!" and then Jimmy goes off on what would be his trademark; on of those 1000 note solos.

Advantages: A definitive early Bowie compilation Disadvantages: DJ links and first five tracks
...This is probably the best compilation of pre "Alladin Sane" David Bowie that you can buy. It's a well selected compilation of radio sessions from the years 1968 to 1972. As a bonus you also get a live Cd recorded at the BBC Radio Theatre in June 2000.
Because these are from radio sessions we get links and introductions from various beeb voices including Brian Matthew and John Peel which amuse and annoy in equal measure. The quality of the recordings are excellent throughout , and as such doubles an essential purchase for new listeners and Bowie-philes alike.
Despite this being an excellent compilation , the first five songs are the pre "Space Oddity" Anthony Newley impressions (remember "Laughing Gnome", it's not here but it's not far away), so are dispensable but serve to illustrate how uninteresting Bowie was in the early days...

I bought my Ultimate Collection from W.H.Smiths shortly after the turn of the mellennium, at £13.99 for 2 CD's and 50 tracks it appeared to be value for money. The bands major songwriters were Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane. The band included Marriott vocals, guitar, Lane bass, Kenny Jones drummer, Jimmy Winston organist. The 2 CD's cover 2 distinct phases in their career. The 1st covers Decca and their rhythm & blues period and The Immediate Sessions reveal later evolution into premier psychedelic cockney popsters.
