Knowlesreaches the grandold age of 25. Dont say you forgot to send a card? But what betterway to celebrate a quarter century, than to release a funky newalbum. It cant do any harm having one of the most highly respectedhip-hop artists as your b-friend and album contributor either. Themighty Jay Zis officially present on two tracks, but has probably whispered a few more funky riffs from the otherside of the bed too. Shes been busy though, as apart fromcompleting her Dreamgirls movie, she has also pencilled ingetting hitched in the autumn if the gossip is to be believed. All well and good, but can she still cut the mustard in the tunesdept? She starts off doing a Neneh Cherryon thefirst track, kindly introducing all the instruments. So welcome tothe bass, hi-hat, 808, and Mr Z too. But that kicks into a primerump-shaker with a rocking good Jay-rap too. After that, Get MeBodied is nicely wriggly, but lacks the same groovy substance ofDj Vu. The funky bassline of Suga Mama is so gloriously 70s,that it could have come from an Austin Powersflick which she has starred in after all. Improvised diva vocalsall add soul, but she doesnt yet have the gutsy range of Alicia Keysor even Joss Stone. Her voice is getting there, but currently lacks the true soulresonance that would make her a great. For someone who must be used to the finest things by now, sheoffers to Upgrade U in another well urban rap-driven number (yes, with more from Jay-Z), but the concept of being able to do for youwhat Martin did for the people (Luther-King we assume) ispresumptuous if not preposterous. But bragging is all part ofhip-hop after all. Its even grittier, rappier, and stripped downon Ring The Alarm (with very cool sirens too), yet it doesntreally go anywhere. Kitty Kat is a rather wishy-washy tale of howher man dont want her no more (yeah, right) and so shes takingher pussycat elsewhere. Very sweet, yet barring the obviousinnuendo, rather lame. If you had fond memories of Crazy In Love, then FreakumDress at least kicks off the same way. Big solid beats that knockseven bells out of your speakers, but without the same gusto thatmade that her biggest singles success to date. Green Light keepsit old-skool funk, and theres an easy catchiness to the agreeablylaid-back Irreplaceable. Its easier and warmer than the sharpertracks before, showing off her obvious talent better in not tryingtoo hard. The gospel-tinged Resentment also shows her talentswell, though realising the real range and depth of her voice isstill an album or two away. The CD finishes off with a private chatfrom Beyonceand how this album came soeffortlessly to her, followed by a huge anthem of a closingnumber. With all due respect to the other girls, she was always going tobe the third of Destinys Childmost liable tocrack the solo market. So although this is not exactly thedifficult second album (as the 4 proper albums with DC havealready dumped that bogey) this is only the second time that shesworked solo admittedly with a good degree of help from Jay-Z. Shes still finding her niche, caughtbetween the appeal of being all grown up, adult, and both seriouslyhip and hop, and the obvious ability to make storming great popsongs. This album has both styles, just not quite enough depth ofeither. Happy bidet anyway. NeilChase Music Editor

is it destined to hold up as one of the thumpingest, most polished-sounding discs of 2006, it's also bound to loose a new phrase into the popular lexicon: a "freekum dress" (n.), as described on a same-named track halfway through this excellent CD, is a "right-fittin'" garment owned by every woman; "when they act wrong, that's when you put it on." Linguistic hijinks aside, here is Beyoncé as the public rarely sees her: fully liberated and artistically fearless. "Ring the Alarm," a big-banging, fire-alarm-clanging wake-up call to a cheating man, finds her seething; "Kitty Kat," a feline-like size-up of a stale relationship helped along by the still innovative Neptunes, shows her spurned; the womanly, fire-in-the-belly come-on "Suga Mama" gets her way, way worked up; and the crackling, vocally volcanic "Resentment" steeps her in Aretha-caliber soul. For all the disc's solo trailblazing, though, where it really soars is on one of two duets with Jay-Z: While "Up Grade U" chugs along entertainingly enough about the good life ("I'm talkin' spa bags and fly pads and rooms at the Bloomberg"), opener "Deja Vu" blasts out a bomp-bomp beat nobody with a head to nod could resist. Cake, candles, and Cristal or no, B'Days rarely get this good. --Tammy La Gorce

The best tracks are:
Track 1: Beautiful Liar ft Shakira; This song has an arabic belly dancing feel along with the video and you can dance to it which is good.

Her first single, 'Deja Vu' was alright but nothing like 'Crazy In Love'.

Track 2: Irreplaceble; When I first heard the album I skipped this track, as it was slow and didn't grap my attention. After hearing it a hundred times on the radio the 'to the left, to the left' bit became catchy. But not exactly original stuff. Track 6: Upgrade You; Its catchy because of the message and the lyrics but still not original. This could be by any artist. Track 7: Flaws n All; The lyrics are quite meaningful, nice ballad Track 9: Get Me Bodied; The best track on the album (the only one I wanted to listen to again). Up tempo track produced by Swiss Beats, good for dancing. Track 16: World Wide Woman; Nice chillout RnB track
Worst Tracks: Track 3: Green Light; This was released and some may like it but I think it was pretty awful. The production was bad also. Track 5: Welcome To Hollywood; What the hell? I don't see the point of this song but I'm sure the video would be good if it is released.
Overall, an ok album but not the level I would expect

This album was great; as soon as I herd Deja Vu I knew I would like her album. Beyonce is a great musician and I think she will achieve a lot. The album includes.
1. Beautiful Liar Beyonce and Shakira - I absolutely love this song, I was shocked at the collaboration though I didn't think Beyonce and Shakira world team up too make a song, it's a good thing the did. My rating for this particular song is ... ...first but I've heard it over and over and over again, so it is a bit annoying but is a good track and deserves 7/10. This song is catchy "To the left to the left".
3. Green Light - This was a song I was unsure about and I didn't know whether I liked it at first, but now I really do like it. This gets 7/10. This song is also catchy I'll always be humming it. "Go go go go oh oh oh oh"
4. Kitty Kat - This is a dirty song, I never knew Beyonce was ...

Advantages: Great tunes and you get the music videos too Disadvantages: none
...i was not dissapointed by B'day deluxe addition as it has a lot of sas and some great songs that make you want to get up and dance. It has all the songs that the original Bday album comes with such as Irreplaceable and Dejavu and includes the newly released songs such as Beautiful liar and Ring the Alarm. The album has a combination of fast beat pop songs with classic R'nB and one or two slow ballads. My two favourite tracks have to be Flaws and All- ... ...me bodied- a fast upbeat song, perfect to listen to before you go on a night out.
If the insanely great range of music wasn't enough the Bday deluxe edition also has dvd versions of some of Beyonces videos.(Some of the videos included are Irreplaceable, Flaws and All, Freakum Dress, Ring the Alarm and Beautiul Liar which features Shakira)
In terms of value for money i definately believe i got my moneys worth as i get to listen to flawless music ...

Album Notes
Beyonce had little to prove on her second solo outing, B'DAY, having already demonstrated her taste, (solo) vocal prowess, and sparkling star quality on her first post-Destiny's Child release in 2003. Nevertheless, the singer and her crack team of producers and collaborators (R&B's finest, including the Neptunes, Swizz Beats, and Rich Harrison) have come up with a collection that's at least equal to her previous triumphs, and that shows off an almost angry intensity only hinted at on earlier releases.
