. Marcus' journey through the circles of hell as embodied by the hordes of drunken bikers in Assen is modelled on Dante (the Dutch original is titled Dis which is the name of an infernal city in the Divine Comedy), but it's Dante seen through the lens of the black humour (not uncommon as a reaction to the horrors of the last century): a cackle on a mass grave, so to speak, and the space Marcus and Jacob travel through is as much the inner space of the tormented souls in search for love and redemption as the external (even if hallucinatory) hell visited by Dante and Orpheus.
Breathtakingly erudite, unashamedly modernist, earthy, ghoulish and lush at the same time, "In a Dark Wood" captures the reader to take him on a mesmerising trip. It offers no firm conclusions, but the trip is worth taking, and possibly even retaking, notwithstanding ...
Advantages: Great plot and characters to keep you reading Disadvantages: None
This is the first book by Tana French and I found it a really good read and would recommend it to those who enjoy crime fiction.
When Adam Ryan was 12 years old he went into the woods behind his house with his two best friends to play, but only he came out. Many years later Adam has changed his name to Rob and become an up and coming detective in the murder squad.
Rob and his partner, Cassie, are still fairly new to the murder squad and are looking for a big case to make their mark. They are the only one's in the office when a call comes through and they are sent to Knocknaree, the village in which Rob grew up, where the body of a young girl, Katy Devlin, has been found. The body of Katy has been found in the same woods where Rob's friends went missing and were never seen again.
Rob has no recollection of what happened that ...
Advantages: Good scares, some shocks, tight pace Disadvantages: Limited concept
If you go down to the woods today, you?re sure of a big surprise. If you go down to the woods today you?d better not close your eyes. Because far from bears are men with sharp glares and very big scary knives.
You know it?s just one of those days when you?re late for an important meeting, you?re met with a traffic jam so you decide to take the back roads. Only you have an accident with another car and there?s not a phone in sight. So you go in a group in search of help, but what you encounter are a bunch of inbred mountain men with cannibal tendencies. This is what happens to Chris Flynn, his wrong turn leads to hell. No one is safe as he bands together with a bunch of teens including the very nubile Eliza Dushku. However they?re lost and they?re prey.
Wrong Turn has a very simple concept. In fact it?s nothing more that your usual ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Mary Black (vocals); Declan Sinnott (guitar, dobro, mandolin, background vocals), Maire Bhreatnach (fiddle, synthesizer); Pat Crowley (accordion, piano, background vocals); Carl Geraghty (saxophone); Garvan Gallagher (bass); Noel Bridgeman (percussion). Recorded at Ringsend Road Studios, Dublin, Ireland from March to June, 1991. Mary Black, along with Maire Brennan and a few other female singers, popularized Irish folk music on a global level. Her 1991 release BABES IN THE WOOD went straight to Number One on the Irish charts and led to two sell-out shows at London's Royal Albert Hall. As usual, her earthy and ethereal brand of folk pulls from Irish traditions as well as from the influences of Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and sometime musical companions Emmylou Harris and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Her stunningly beautiful voice is supported on this release by long time musical colleague Declan Sinnot who plays guitars, dobro, and mandolin, and adds lush backing vocals throughout, as well as producing. Highlights include the serene "Prayer For Love" and the album's closer, Joni Mitchell's classic "The Urge For Going." In a sorrowful tune about the end of a love affair, Black's voice brims with passion and empathy for the characters in Mitchell's story.
