...", the recording of the Gothenburg Symphony under Neeme Järvi is one of the best I have heard (as are the other rhapsodies in the set from which this has been taken from), being rich, sonorous, and jubilant. This is followed by Leroy Anderson's comical "The Typewriter," one of the numerous light pieces that Anderson wrote in his life, and features the tapping of a typewriter to great effect. It's a perfect "pops" lollipop and provides endless hours of fun after drinking a bit of… ummm… happy beveriges. Johann Sebastian Bach is represented by two pieces. "Jesu bleibet meine Freude" is not exactly that exilarating; it is not far removed from the usual string orchestra arrangement it is often heard in, this performance only adding what sounds like 2-4 trumpets for providing some accents. Balsom on form again!
Review of Alison Balsom - Trumpet Transcriptions by Nathanmusic

Advantages: World Class Trumpet playing from a Brit!
Disadvantages: Seven tracks of Spanish songs maybe a little to many for some

...Alison Balsom is making quite a name for herself on the international music scene. Her delightful style and majestic sound make this album a top buy. Throughout the CD influences of Hakan Hardenberger are heard (her former teacher). Looking at the track listing on the album you might think a risk has been taken transcribing works which are grounded into the history of other instruments and turning them into trumpet music. As soon as the CD starts spinning in the machine you know that the risk has pulled off. Music of Mozart and Bach sound like they were written for trumpet. Some say that Balsom has only made it to where she is because of her good looks. This is complete and utter nonsense as we here in track 4 'Variations on Casta Diva'. This composition challenges every aspect of trumpet playing yet Balsom takes it in her breeze.... Read review

Songs from Medieval Bavaria
Review of Orff: Carmina Burana (arr piano) by Newfloridian

Advantages: A fine mixture of gothic, medieval and modern music and words. You will know some of the themes - it will repay study. This is a superb rendition.

...and waning, hateful life” Primo Vere The first part of the cantata is “Spring”. This starts with a series of quiet understated songs which represent the world welcoming the returning Springtime and Man (represented by a solo baritone) singing a simple melody to the sun. Orff used a whole range of keyboard instruments (including celeste and glockenspiel) and percussion here and restrained the voices to a small chorus with plainsong accompaniment. The section finishes with a grand chorus glorying in the transformation of Spring into Summer and in the fertility and fruits of the earth, animals and man. Next comes “The Dance” – an instrumental piece featuring a jolly rustic peasant dance with contrapunctal rhythms and discordant themes.
