The album begins with a selection of early music, including ‘Come again’ by Dowland, ‘Dido’s Lament’ from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and ‘Heute noch, lieber vater’ from Bach’s Coffee Cantata. Bonney demonstrates superbly that early music doesn’t have to be lacking in emotion- her Dido is subtly drawn but full of pain and tragedy. The Alleluia from Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate shows an impressive technical flexibility and skill, with Bonney making the scalic coloratura runs sound ridiculously easy (and having sung the piece I can assure you that they are not!). But for me it is in the Mozart operatic arias that Bonney really shines. She has the perfect voice for Mozart opera- light but warm and full of personality. Her ‘... Read review

Orchestrating Music with Colourful Dialect

Advantages: Great performances of popular favourites and some rare gems
Disadvantages: Barely none, with perhaps slight issues with sound.

...", the recording of the Gothenburg Symphony under Neeme Järvi is one of the best I have heard (as are the other rhapsodies in the set from which this has been taken from), being rich, sonorous, and jubilant. This is followed by Leroy Anderson's comical "The Typewriter," one of the numerous light pieces that Anderson wrote in his life, and features the tapping of a typewriter to great effect. It's a perfect "pops" lollipop and provides endless hours of fun after drinking a bit of… ummm… happy beveriges. Johann Sebastian Bach is represented by two pieces. "Jesu bleibet meine Freude" is not exactly that exilarating; it is not far removed from the usual string orchestra arrangement it is often heard in, this performance only adding what sounds like 2-4 trumpets for providing some accents. Songs from Medieval Bavaria
Review of Orff: Carmina Burana (arr piano) by Newfloridian

Advantages: A fine mixture of gothic, medieval and modern music and words. You will know some of the themes - it will repay study. This is a superb rendition.

Amore suscrescente, partier e medio avulso procul tedio, fit ludus ineffabilis membris lacertis labiis” I decided to try my hand at a review of a piece of classical music. My CD library has a fair smattering of conventional pieces by Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikowsy and Brahms. Of course you will have known by now my interest in Gilbert and Sullivan, but I have chosen instead to look at this sensational work from the 1930s by Carl Orff “Carmina Burana” (Songs, secular and profane). It is one of those works that has been subject to “borrowing” from the mass media and its main theme will be extremely well known. However, the whole work does repay some study and is well worth a listen. It has a curious history with shades of dissolute monks, lusty wenches, inns filled... Read review
