Bach based all three of these cantatas on Martin Luther's chorale tune "Nun komm der ... more
Heiden Heiland" ("Come thou redeemer of the Earth"). Two of them, BWV 61 and 62, use the melody in their opening choruses--and its name for their titles. BWV 61 comes from Bach's early period in Weimar: it includes a solemn opening chorus with forceful string playing; an exuberant tenor aria (in jig time) welcoming Jesus; a virginal soprano aria; and a near-miraculous final chorus that creates a feeling of joyous wonder in a mere 45 seconds. BWV 62 begins with a similarly grave but more densely written chorus and proceeds to several festive solo numbers. BWV 36, Schwingt freudig euch empor ("Soar joyfully aloft"), is the longest and richest of the three cantatas. While its sparkling opening chorus doesn't use the Nun komm melody, three subsequent movements (which are dispersed among freely composed arias) do so--in ways very similar to those in the famous Easter cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden: of those, the soprano/alto duet and the gorgeous trio for tenor (singing the chorale) and two oboes are particularly remarkable. The performances on this disc are breathtaking, even by Philippe Herreweghe's standards. Since this recording was made in 1996, soprano Sibylla Rubens and mezzo Sarah Connolly have gone on to find success in European opera houses; happily, here they sound as comfortable with--and appropriate for--period-instrument Bach as their specialist colleagues, the top-notch Christoph Prégardien and Peter Kooy. The warmth, precision and tonal beauty of Collegium Vocale (both choir and orchestra) are, as usual, wondrous. --Matthew Westphal

Advantages: A natural way to heal and help emotional well being Disadvantages: None
Dr Bach`s Rescue remedy has been a blessing for my daughter this year, she suffered from severe post-natal depression and hoped to overcome it with the support of family and friends rather than using prescribed medication.
We both believe in Homeopathic remedies and often turn to the Internet for advice on herbal treatments.
We have a smaller Holland and Barrett store within easy reach and have found the staff very helpful and informative.
So armed with some knowledge gained from www.internethealthlibrary.com and assistance from the staff at Holland and Barrett,Evie decided she would try the Dr Bach Rescue Remedy.
Where prescribed medicine made Evie wary, the Rescue remedy was a safe option.
The whole idea is to choose the Bach flower remedy that is a suitable match for how you may feel.
There are 5 types to choose from, they are ...
Advantages: Reassures and comforts me! Disadvantages: Taste, might not work for everyone
♣Doubting the miracle♣
It was around this time last year that my airplane phobia increased to an intolerable level. We were visiting my boyfriend?s family for Christmas ? and I simply could not face the plane journey back. His mother kindly told me that I needed to ?snap out of it? and handed me a little yellow box with Bach?s Rescue Remedy. I eyed it suspiciously. I never believed in such herbal miracles. But I took the box and sitting at the airport, I remember taking quite a bit of this product to calm my nerves. I honestly do not remember if it worked at the time, but I did make it back home somehow ? didn?t I? The bottle then disappeared in a draw, not to be remembered until ?
? I next encountered the Rescue Remedy when I left my somewhat quiet job for a hectic city job. A colleague handed me a leaving present in ...
Advantages: Beautiful relaxing music. Rich instrumentation. Played with passion. Disadvantages: Not all instruments are from the period.
If I was ever asked to select my "desert island discs", top of my list would be Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. (I wonder if there's a category in the ciao café?. . . ) The six Brandenburg concertos, each with their distinct quality and sound requiring a different combination of instruments, are not only a delight to listen to but exemplify the intellectual musical genius of their composer, Johann Sebastian Bach. All six are composed in major keys creating and maintaining a cheerful, vivacious collection. The modulations of key demanded by the baroque conventions are skilfully completed and Bach's predilection for numbers and ornate touches are evident. I could say more but this isn't a musical analysis . . .
I am not alone in my high estimation, The Brandenburg concertos are now probably the best loved and most frequently performed ...
