cantatas, you won't need any further prodding to
persuade you to buy this one. If you haven't, what
does this volume offer in particular? Well, the
joy of discovery for a start, since none of the
works here is particularly well known. Which is
not to say they shouldn't be. Take the sublime
opening chorus of No.25, or that of No.69a, a
veritable paean to God's glory, with Bach dusting
down the timpani and brass and giving them a field
day. Then there's the swirling soprano aria in
No.64, contrasting with the cosy alto aria that
follows (Robin Blaze just gets better and better).
Even Cantata No.50, a three-and-a-half minute
fragment, is a truly impressive torso, an
unstoppable fugal chorus building up to a glorious
climax. The performances are well up to Suzuki's
usual standards (ie, higher than anyone else's), a
couple of soprano insecurities apart. Suzuki
remains the most compelling of modern-day
directors in this field, and the results here are

Stirring and Sublime
Review of Bach: Works for Trumpet by  zerbine28

Advantages: Wonderful transcriptions of JS Bach's majestic music; sensitive, tender, vivacious, effortless and fluid playing.
Disadvantages: Nil.

...plans to return to the USA. Ms Balsom has already had her US debut, performing just this January 2006 with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (Milwaukee? Not New York City and Carnegie Hall? How did they get to be so lucky in Wisconsin! Methinks Ms Balsom needs a better agent/promoter, no?!). FINAL VERDICT: I give this disc an unqualified, insanely enthusiastic recommendation with all thumbs and great toes up, for all lovers of Bach and/or the trumpet. Total, absolute must-have recording. Orchestrating Music with Colourful Dialect

Advantages: Great performances of popular favourites and some rare gems
Disadvantages: Barely none, with perhaps slight issues with sound.

...Marketplace seem to begin from £2,98. For anybody even remotely interested in classical music and who already have a compilation album that contains all the usual suspects, this is ideal. Of recent times there are only a few compilations that have music I don't already have 15 times over, and thus "Colours of the Orchestra" was a really nice surprise.
