Review of Songs Without Words by Caroline_Hodgson

Advantages: Outstanding playing, interesting repertoire
Disadvantages: Full price disc

...This disc from Murray Perahia on the Sony label is quite simply one of the best solo piano discs to be released in recent years. Containing four Bach/Busoni transcriptions, excerpts from Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words and some of Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert songs, the disc shows off Perahia's astounding technique and musicality simultaneously. I've listened to this disc almost every day for the past two months and I'm STILL not bored with it! It seems to have a piece of music for every mood, from the upbeat, almost jazzy feel of the Bach to the sombre gallop of Schubert's Erl-King. This is the first disc of Perahia's that I've really got into - can't wait for his forthcoming disc of Bach's Goldberg Variations!... Read review

The Master of Baroque
Review of Essential JS Bach by Autumn-Swallow

Advantages: Excellent composer
Disadvantages: non

...I sallute to Bach. Bach can be very romantic, calm or even agitated (sometimes agressive) in his compositions. I like most of his composition especially his piano work. In his fourty eight Preludes and Fugues, if you played them all, you can experience a mixture of emotions that he has implanted in this particular set of work. I like to play Bach's Preludes and Fugues when I feel very down, very angry even when I am very happy. I will definitely find a piece that suit my emotion and mood, and feel much more better after playing them. Some of my... Read review

Review of Rarities of Piano Music at Schloss vor Husum, 1998 by skriabini

Advantages: Wide range of little-know music played live by world-class pianists
Disadvantages: None for those who enjoy classical Piano Solo music

...). Sauer is better known as an editor of piano works by Liszt, but he wrote sonatas, a large number of concert studies, and other works in a fairly conservative style, showing little influence of Liszt. Here Marshev plays two concert studies with a beautiful light wispy touch, amply fulfilling the titles of the works, "Sighing Breezes" and "Rustling Leaves". Marshev ends with an encore by Rodion Shchedrin, "A la Albeniz". Shchedrin is a twentieth century Russian composer whose music is enjoyable to listen to, and does not have the harshness and angularity of other modern composers, such as some works by Prokofiev. A la Albeniz is a lively, rhythmic work, written in homage to the Spanish composer, Isaac Albeniz. Marshev plays this work with verve, bringing out the Spanish melodies and rhythms with a Russian tinge. Piers Lane Piers Lane... Read review
