for her instrument (BWV1001-1006) when he was in prison for a month in 1717 after falling out with his employer at Weimar over his projected move to Coethen. This is a delightful idea. After all, there is nothing more solo than a cell. Miss Huggett plays the entire cycle on this excellent album in the alternating order prescribed by the composer. She is an authenticist and plays a gut-strung baroque violin built by Amati in 1618. Some will prefer the silky, sustained tone of later Romantic instruments but Huggett's thirsty, unrepentant tone pleads the sober music through until the last Partita arrives to unlock the door with the liberating key of E major. The debate is two-sided. The sonatas are logic--they all have fugal second movements; the partitas are passion--they are dance suites. Nothing is better argued than the exhaustive 12-minute fugue in the third Sonata in C major. Nothing reaches the heart more than the massive "Ciaconna" in the second Partita in D minor. It has been diminished over the years by pianists' and others' attempts to reinvent it; Huggett's original instrument version cannot be gainsaid. --Rick Jones
