Andrew Manze has been called "the Grappelli of the Baroque violin" because of the ... more
improvisatory liveliness of his approach. But he might with equal appropriateness be called the Rory Bremner of period playing, because--as he shows on this recording--he seems to be able to inhabit different musical personalities, and move between them with astonishing ease. Sometimes he pads along with sinewy grace like a panther ready to spring (the "Preludio" to BWV1023, for example), sometimes he goes for a much more relaxed cantabile line, and sometimes he plays with a sparkling and infectious sense of fun ("Presto", BWV1021). Add into the mix his varied styles of vibrato, and the result is positively Shakespearean in its sense of teeming life and characterful drama. He is accompanied with an almost telepathic sense of partnership by Richard Egarr, and in four of the nine sonatas by Jaap ter Linden. As an extra treat, Manze also includes his own arrangement (which he calls a reconstruction) of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor for organ. Advantages: At the end of the day everytime you play the violin you are rewarded with a beautiful pure sound Disadvantages: Practise!!!!!!
I saw the violin for the first time at a performance called shipwreck at the Anvil in Basingstoke, then I saw the violin again, the mellow sound tingled through my ears and seemed very relaxing and chilling.
I soon began mimicking the violinist, my mum and dad noticed and asked whether I would like to play, just see how it goes, and if I didn?t like it I could quit.
I went to our nearest music shop, Modern Music, www.modernmusic.co.uk, and asked to look at their list of violin teachers, then they recommended Kim Graham (water-witch is her username) Kim is an amazing music teacher, she has helped me the whole way, and I would definitely recommend her to anyone!
I am now doing grade 6 and I enjoy the violin so much, I am participating in Basingstoke Area Youth Orchestra (BAYO) currently and I audition for the Hampshire County ...

Advantages: J. S. Bach; all musicians and vocalists; Karajan. Disadvantages: Karajan's big, ponderous sound and historical inauthenticity, for some.
like huge raindrops high above the stage. A massive pipe organ stands to one side. I do wonder how good the acoustics of the place is. (Alas, bad timing robbed us of the chance to attend a concert here during our visit to Berlin last September, and we had to be content with surveying the distinctive circus tent-like buildings in the complex from the outside.)
VIOLIN CONCERTO IN E MAJOR, BWV 1042
The E Minor Violin Concerto holds a special niche in my musical heart, having been one of the early pieces that introduced me to the magic and mystery of J. S. Bach when I was just entering my teens. The work has yet to grow old for this listener.
Mr Karajan here throws the entire weight of the modern symphony orchestra wholly at the service of the piece, producing a huge, all-encompassing sound that might seem foreign to the composer ...
Advantages: Romantic orchestral music Disadvantages: Only 1 hour - eat quickly for a romantic dinner
Johann Sebastian Bach, giant among Baroque composers, was a prolific writer whose versatility and creativity resulted in a wealth of musical works with a diversity ranging from sacred choral works, keyboard music to orchestra music.
The CD, Concerto for Two Violins in D minor / Violin Concertos in A minor & E minor, is an orchestral recording conducted by Salvatore Accardo, in which two violins (Anne-Sophie Mutter and Salvatore Accardo) / solo violin (Anne-Sophie Mutter) are contrasted with a larger orchestra (English Chamber Orchestra) of strings and bass continuo instrument the harpsichord.
Bach is often criticized for his strict attention to form. Whilst, I greatly admire Bach for his intellectual and methodical approach to composition, what I enjoy most is the harmonious and melodic music that results.
This CD is a superb ...
