Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or ... more
otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, "Rehab" becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it's echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. Winehouse's lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated: on "You Know I'm No Good", she's unapologetic about her unfaithfulness. But she can also be witty, as on "Me & Mrs Jones" when she berates a boyfriend with "You made me miss the Slick Rick gig". Back to Black is a refreshingly mature soul album, the best of its kind for years. --Ted Kord

Amy Winehouse. Who hasn't heard of her? Shes known for her 'beehive and her lifestyle is known by the majority of the UK as a drug taking, drunk, rehab entry who commonly now asks audiences to 'Big up' her 'hubby Blake' who is in prison right now. But with all this happening, it can make some people miss out on the good side of Amy - her music. While this dramatic change in her lifestyle has entered the headlines, Amy Winehouse has been producing some amazing music, of which this very album includes.
From the start of the album until the end, the ex Sylvia Young Theatre School and Brits School goer never fails to show off her loud and extremely talented voice. The album starts with CD1 starter 'Rehab'. Probably now her most well-known song due to her recent circumstances. Its a great and straight to the point song, with Amy concluding continuously that she is fine and needs no help with drinking problems. From the start, we understand that this album is full of lyrics that mean a lot to Amy, even more understandable by the day as more and more of Amy's life admittances are plastered over newspapers and the weekly Heat magazines.
Other fantastic songs on CD1 are Back To Black, a song of which I can tell you from personal experience will fail to leave your head for days or even weeks, Love Is A Losing Game, a beautiful ballad that can even actually make you feel sorry for her distancing with Blake right now, Tears Dry On Their Own, the fastest song of the album which is highly catchy and one great to dance to, and finally Me & Mr Jones, an album track which is meant for Amy's voice, a truly amazing and relaxing song to listen to.

CD2 starts off with Amy's original recording of Valerie, the now well known Amy cover of the Zutons classic which people are singing all over the country on karaoke. A lot less up-tempo, this version may seem boring to some, however those who love to treasure songs of which her vocal talent is expressed to the limits will love this. Another great track is the Love Is A Losing Game Original Demo. It does what you would expect, impresses which a much more liver version of the song which could easily have been released how it is heard here, relaxing and in some ways heart-breaking, with yet live, amazing vocals!
Overall though, the bonus CD is not very exciting.

Overall, this is definitely a must buy. Amy Winehouse and her producers, including famous Mark Ronson have created an Album to treasure. This is a must-own and was the most bought album in 2007. It also recently topped the charts again after her outstanding performances on the Brit Awards 2008.

Review of Back To Black (Deluxe Edition) - Amy Winehouse
Advantages: Twice as much excellent music Disadvantages: price - depending on where you buy
...originally heard the title track Back to Black and was haunted by the lyrics. However I wasn't sure her album would be worth buying. Then I heard some of the other great songs on the first disc such as 'rehab' and 'tears dry on their own'. Amy's music has an old-time feel to it, of jazz and soul in some Southern bar. I love the sounds of the Sax and the sadness of the songs although I always end up humming away in a cheerful mood after hearing it. ... ...Deluxe edition by accident when I was searching for the best price. I found that for little more than the cost of the standard 'Back to Black' album (depending on where you buy - check out Amazon's marketplace or download it) I could get another CD. For me the hit of the second album is the upbeat and very successful 'Valerie'. I find myself singing it all day long although it is more upbeat than a lot of Amy's songs and her die-hard fans may not ...

Back to Black is one of the best soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out in years. Her brassy mix of emotive vocals tinged with 60's girl group styling combined with jazz rightly prompted to the New York Daily News to crown Winehouse's Back to Black a: " marvelous debut that would do Etta James proud." Back to Black smolders with a fusion of old school doo-wop/soul inflected uprisings creating instant ...
