I've got all the Back To Love compilations from Hed Kandi of of "classic tracks that gave birth to a whole generation of clubbers", and was listening to this one (well, both CD's in this double-pack actually) in my car earlier today, so though't I'd let you know what I thought...
---
CD1
1. "You're gonna miss me" - Turntable Orchestra (original mix) Classic "italian house" piano, and a great baseline
2. "Love will find a way" - Victor Romeo feat. Latrice Brown Nothing special about this one really, a bit of a filler really...
3. "See the day" - Ann Consuelo (Stonebridge mix) What a vocal ! And more italian piano.
4. "Aftershock" - Slave to the Vibe (12" club mix) Maybe it's this extended 12" mix (that Hed Handi is all about), but I remember this track being much better...
5. "Push the feeling on" - Nightcrawlers Although the main break kind of sounds
like an early Nokia ringtone (!), this was, and still is a grreat track - although I hav eno idea what the main vocal actually says...
6. "Don't lose the magic" - Shawn Christopher (David Morales club mix) Did you know that was once a backup vocalist for Chaka Khan ? Didn't think so...
7. "Give you" - Djamin featuring Alessandra (Mix 91 dancefloor Syndromad mix) Djamin is Swiss. Switzerland's not a country you would usually associate with house music is it ? Nothing special.
8. "I'll be there for you (Doya dododo doya)" - house of Virginism (Stone's glamarama club mix) Another massive vocal track from the Stonebridge folks. Sounds a bit like the Royal House classic "Can you Party".
9. "Lover that you are" - Pulse Interesting Adeva-esque vocal. I've heard better.
10. "And I'm telling you" - Donna Giles (Stonebridge mix) Great, and, bizarrely, a remake of the theme from the stage musical "Dreamgirls" based on the story of The Supremes...
11. "Weekend" - Todd Terry A very "Chicago" sounding track, as you would expect from Todd Terry, the boss of US house.
CD2
1. "Keep on movin'" - Soul II Soul (club mix) This great track has always been a bit overshadowed by the follow up from Jazzie B and the friends, "Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)" with Caron Wheeler. Shame.
2. "Wishing on a star" - Fresh 4 A hundred people have done covers of this song, including, recently, "The Modfather" Paul Weller. This bare bones version is OK, nothiong special.
3. "Eye know" - De La Soul (the know it all mix) That whisting song from the "Daisy Age"-ers, although I still prefer "A rollerskating jam"...
4. "Talkin' all that jazz" - Stetasonic (extended vocal) In defense of rap: "You critizie our method of how we make records, You said it wasn't art, so now we're gonna rip you apart" Eloquent rap.
5. "Who's da bad man" - Dee Patten (Sound System mix) This 1992 track with its a deep dub-styled bassline and distinctive vocal (sampled from the Jamaican movie "The Harder They Come", allegedly) was a kind of Jungle-seed, from which a whole genre sprouted.
6. "I know you got soul" - Eric B and Rakim Another sample-tastic all time classic, including a Jackson 5 snippet, and , of course, itself the source for MARRS "Pump op the volume" sample. What goes around comes around....
7. "A knife and a fork" - Think Tank (frisco disco mix) What an odd song...
8. "It takes 2" - Rob Base and EZ Rock I think this could have been the start of that whole "whoa - yeah" thing...
9. "Must bee the music" - King Bee Remarkably similar to their "Back by Dope Demand", with a little Monie Love sample...
10. "Got to be real" - Cheryl Lynn Cheryl Lynn won the US television "Pop Idol" stlye talent show The Gong Show in 1976. This song first came out in 1978, but this is a timeless classic.
11. "Roadblock" - Stock, Aitken and Waterman (Rare groove version) Remember everyone though this was sone "Rage Groove" classic ? And it turned out to be good old SAW ? Fantastic
12. "Why" - Carly Simon (extended version) This version of the1982 original was a real balearic anthem in those early ibiza days. Just imagine listening to this as the sun sets at Cafe Del Mar..... La de dah de dah...
13. "A little sensitivity" - Lavine Hudson They saved the best 'till last. Another fantastic vocal performance here, worth the whole album just for this one !

Overall, this is a good CD, but some of the Back To Love greatness from the earlier releases is beginning to wear a bit thin. The first Back To Love is definitely the best, and if you're going to buy just one of these compilations, that's the one to go for, rather than this one.
I hope this helps...
