Balboa Island - Pretty Things (The)

Advantages: Really impressive action adventure score, one of the best of 2005
Disadvantages: Some action scenes a little unremarkable

...INTRODUCTION After tackling with the giant undertaking of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and garnering so much critical and popular (as well as Oscar) success, director Peter Jackson had things pretty sweetly in his pocket, allowing him to basically do what ever he wanted. So with the studios more than willing to let Jackson have free reign over what to do next, he went in a completely different direction from the literary fantasy genre to a cinematic icon: King Kong. King Kong is of course one of the most famous movies ever made, involving a big ape being transported to New York from an obscure island as a spectacular new exibition only to escape, wreack havoc on the city, kidnap the pretty female lead, and climb to the top of the Empire State Building only to be fall down with a big thump. ...The first FLC album is a lot harder edged than their follow up, 100% Colombian and me being me I prefer it for that, though plenty of my friends prefer 100% Colombian, it’s not really a quality difference thing, just a different mood. It’s hard to pick standout tracks from this, but I will try. The Fun Lovin’ Criminal, Scooby Snacks, Bombin’ The L, King of New York, Methadonia and Coney Island Girl are, for me, the best tracks. The album isn’t all ‘edge’ though, FLC manage to squeeze in a cover of We Have All The Time in the World for good measure. It’s a fantastic album and recommend it to anyone who want’s something a bit different as well as their follow up, 100% Colombian.... Read review

Advantages: Loud, Poppy, Punky, well written songs
Disadvantages: Some weak tracks, similar songs

...Maladroit is an explosive powerful pop punk record. Weezer's frontman Rivers Cuomo has always had a great ability to write hook laden pop songs, from 'Buddy Holly' to 'Hash pipe' and the band sound more and more confident on this album. This album contains the singles, Dope Nose, Keep Fishin', and Island in the sun, which also appeared on their last album. River's lyrics are as always brilliant, thoughtful and humourous, and the addition of new bass player Scott Shriner gives the band a more heavy rock edge. Overall I feel that this album is to be highly reccomended to rock fans, as it displays a wonderful mix of not only songwriting talent, but also lyrical talent, a two things that are often exclusive....
