'The Ballad Hits' by Roxette is a compilation of some of the duo's greatest ever tracks. Roxette is essentially a group of two from Sweden, named Marie and Per. They were huge in the late 1980s and throughout the whole of the 1990s. At the turn of the millenium, their popularity levelled out, and since Marie's surgery to remove a brain tumour in 2003, they have paled behind the scenes somewhat.
This album was released early 2003 in the UK, and contains such tracks as 'Listen To Your Heart' and their smash hit 'It Must Have Been Love'. There are 15 tracks in all, most were seen in their album 'Don't Bore Us - Get To The Chorus', but this ballad album does reveal a few new songs.
These are the tracks:
1. A Thing About You 2. It Must Have Been Love 3. Listen To Your Heart 4. Fading Like A Flower 5. Spending My Time 6. Queen Of Rain 7. Almost Unreal 8. Crash! Boom! Bang! 9. Vulnerable 10. You Don't Understand Me 11. Wish I Could Fly 12. Anyone 13. Salvation 14. Milk And Toast And Honey 15. Breathe
The album has been criticised for being too similar to 'Don't Bore Us - Get To The Chorus', and this is a valid criticism. However, this album was released with the specific intent to show their ballads, and it does that very well. Roxette are essentially a pop band, sometimes erring towards being labelled as light dance music, but always entertaining their fanbase.
It is very poppy music, and I do like some of the tracks, but the majority fall by the wayside for me. It's not my cup of tea, really, and it doesn't really hold my interest. Sure, it is good quality pop ballading, and for that I'll give it a thumbs up - it does exactly what it says on the tin, so to speak. And I have to say that 'Vulnerable' is the best track on here. I really like this tune, and view it as the best on the album. Interestingly enough, it's one of the rare occasions Per takes the lead vocals. Normally, that falls to Marie.
I rate this album 3 stars out of 5. It has a few great tracks, but is nevertheless quite average for a greatest hits offering.
The album is available from amazon.co.uk for £14.49 new, but I would advise looking elsewhere as you will almost certainly be able to buy it for a lot less somewhere else.

Roxette's Ballad Hits demonstrates what it is that's made their band successful. It's a ... more
simple formula, but it works every time. After a quiet, exquisitely maudlin verse, Marie Fredriksson unleashes that shockingly big voice, the drums crash, huge guit...
