OK. This is the first album by Annie Lennox I have bought so far, though I plan on getting the rest of her albums.
Every song on the album is very different, and they are all written by her.
At an age of 48, she is doing pretty well releasing this now! Shes been around for quite a while. I think she's had a break of about eleven years since her last album, but she has clearly spent alot of time on the writing and fine-tuning of this beautiful collection of songs.
The lyrics are very complex and poetic. Annie has had experience of many different ups and downs in her life and it shows in her writing.
GENRE: i think its sort of a rocky (but light) poppy (good) a bit classical (but still nice and hip), i cant really put my finger on it.
The album starts of with the beautiful song "A Thousand Beautiful Things". This song really grows on you - i think you have to listen to it once and then listen to something totally different, then listen to something else. Her interesting (but phenomonal) voice really shows itself off in this
song. It is sampled a few times and used to make chords and stuff. Its really cool. Theres lots of nice synthesiser bits as well.
The album is actually very good background music - i sometimes put it on while im doing my homework. Some of the long words are useful in english essays lol.......
The second track, Pavement Cracks, I think is probably one of the best tracks on the albums. At the beginning she sings almost on her own with a light stringy synthesiser voice in the background. She sings a verse and then the chorus on her own, before the percussion enters and the texture slowly builds up. She sings another few verses with the background (which is full and really finely done) and she layers her voice at points to create beautifully arranged harmonics.
3 - The Hurting Time - This has a much more laid back jazzy feel than the rest of the song. One of my favs..... Has a little sort of beepy thing in the background which sounds really cool. And she sort of distorts the piano bits and kind of blends the different notes together... its really hard to describe but it sounds amazing! Her voice is just soo amazing..... i would love to be able to write something like this!
4 - Honestly - This is quite cool. Uses a synthesised guitar in the background. I love how she layers her voice.... it sort of acts like the percussion.... amazing! I really like this song......
5 - Wonderful - this one isnt as good as the rest but it still rocks.... I like it.... its nice and has little sessions and a very definite beat. Her voice is great!
(BY THE WAY im not sure if this is the right track order because i got the song names etc. of my ipod which changes them around sometimes grrrrr......)
6 - Bitter Pill - Has a bit of an 80s feel to it which i love - 80s are my fav decade lol! anyway she sings really well and uses quite cool synthesisers. I think the words i would use to describe it are "angry, haha your fault you had it all and u threw it away" like that... if oyu know what i mean!
7 - Loneliness - This one is a bit of a sing-along one. It uses synthesisery bits which are quite nice and she layers her voice a bit. Uses synthesised guitar too. I cant tell what its about.....
8 - The Saddest Thing I've Got - Uses muffled drums which i love. And its got lovely juicy little bits where her voice clashes with itself (layered) its lovely. It's lovely this one! warms the cogs of your heart......
9 - Erased - I think its about a bad relationship 'nothing ever happened' 'if i you see me walking down the street i wont even recognise you... ill just erase you from my memory' I really like it. And she shows off her voice. Actually sounds a bit scottish somehow!
10 - Twisted - I LOVE this one its one of my favs on the album.... . about a relationship? ' i didnt want to hurt you or be hurt by you' 'nothing or noone touches me like you' i dunno... im crap at workign out what songs are about..... i love the bits where she doesnt sing anything she just sings like la la or ah ah lol..... i love it... And i love how she does the 'doo's like percussion..... Brilliant! I love how she uses like no texture at the begining of her songs and loads n loads near the end...... Shes amazing!
11 - Oh God (prayer) - The shortest track on the album, juts 2 minutes 53 secs.... anyway i dont like this one as much as the rest of the album but its still nice. Her voice goes really high! Anyway a nice ending one anyway. I think it definitely is a prayer..... anyway.....
Well i hope you enjoy the album if you buy it.... i hope you do!
Just in case you didnt get this from the rest of the review, i love the album!
Charles
