cellist Ben Davis and BBC Jazz Award winner Seb Rochford. Though the band have been playing together for some time, a recorded project has been a long time coming, though luckily it's worth the wait. Both Davis and Rochford are classically trained, but draw on non-classical compositional styles such as jazz and freeform music. Featuring a slew of original tunes plus several re-interpretations, Basquiat Strings moves slickly through a host of different sounds, from the angular "Double Dares" and the driving "Junk," - both fine examples of both the band's immaculate playing and Davis' superb writing skills. The `covers' here are equally penetrative: Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes," Zawinul's "In a Silent Way" and Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" emerge as virtually new tracks, scattered and embellished with not just jazz and classical references but also folk elements from Macedonia and Hungary. Not one for the jazz or classical purists perhaps, but Basquiat Strings will provide oodles of stimulation for just about everyone else. --Paul Sullivan

Album Notes: Unique debut release from classically-trained, rock-influenced jazz string quintet, who have performed on albums by such diverse artists as rapper Ty, soulstress Juliet Roberts and ex-Underworld DJ Darren Emerson. Recorded with drummer Seb Rochford of Polar Bear (another former Mercury nominee), this disc sees them tackle jazz classics as well as performing powerful, driving original material influenced by classical music and Eastern European folk.
...of nowhere in such a way that you can almost feel someone flipping the switch in the studio to overlay it on the other tracks. Its really badly done, and sounds straight out of Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power Album, and the final piece of Pantera-esque throat-ripping just sums the whole thing up. Its a slow brooding, sluggish track, not bad apart from the poor production, but otherwise nothing too inspiring and with ideas obviously ‘borrowed’ from elsewhere...and that said, its also one of the BETTER tracks here. 'Firesign' comes next, starting promisingly with some intriguing musicianship and Seb Bach singing in almost storytelling mode. Far more inspired here, this is the kind of thing which may have saved this album were it carried on throughout.
Unfortunately it isn't.
The album makes a habit of going from good to bad...

...This album is truly, quite literally unbelievable.....I am still trying to believe that it is him who is making these sounds...has he got a drum kit and decks with him apparently not...This is backed up on track 13 when he is live and shows the audience that he is actually making these noises without aid of anything but his mouth...You have to listen to it 4-5 times to believe it but only once to enjoy the truly fantastic lyrics and beat…I borrowed the album from my good friend Seb who has also written a review on the beat box champion of the world….so don’t forget to read it....thank you seb for introducing me to raz....Marklampo.......
