Review of Night At The Opera, A - Various Artists by tomo7

Advantages: Easy on the ear. Very professional performance
Disadvantages: Already released in a different form on 2 separate CD's

...This album of two cd's is really a compilation of two other previously released albums by Bryn Terfel. If you have already got "Handel Arias" and "Operatic Arias" then do not waste money on this. They are more or less identical.Terfel is in top form in all the arias. His voice was at it's peak when the Handel parts were recorded. I bought it because I happen to like bass and bass-baritone singers.I was not disappointed because Terfels voice, although not truly bass, has the deep and warm quality that I know from the American Bass Samuel Ramey. If you get this CD and expect to hear something like his ghastly performance in the Proms in recent years where he looked like a rugby supporter, then you will be surprised. Here we have a master at work . His diction is good and the range and sheer beauty of his craft is fully evident... Read review

The musical chemist
Review of The World of Borodin by MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Best of Borodin's compositions
Disadvantages: Extracts only

...’s talents. Containing extracts from his best known works, it is a kind of “greatest hits compilation”. Borodin composed only one opera, Prince Igor. Begun in 1869, Borodin spent almost eighteen years working on the music. The opera based on a Russian epic set in the 12th century, relates the tale of Prince Igor’s conflict with marauding Tartars and his capture by the Polovtsian leader Khan Konchak. The opening track of the CD is the overture, played by the London Symphony Orchestra ( 2 flutes, piccolo,), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, tambourine, glockenspiel, harp and strings). Based on material from the opera, the overture summarizes the story in a musical précis. The orchestral overture begins slowly with melancholic strings and woodwind portraying... Read review

Review of Borodin: Prince Igor - Highlights by Maestrolover

Advantages: Impressive performance of interesting opera at an unbeatable price
Disadvantages: You will be left wanting more

...horns, trombones and woodwind, a quite distinctive sound. Many themes from the opera appear in the overture and their differing characterisations are very well brought out in this performance. Fine dynamic range and sound quality throughout the overture. 2 "I don't like boredom" - Galitzky's Recitative and Aria, Act 1: I should state that the vocal extracts on this CD are sung in the original Russian, but there is are translations in the CD booklet. This humorous aria sung by a Russian character about girls, alcohol and yet more girls is performed wittily by bass Taras Shtonda, a typical Russian bass - he carries off this rather fun vodka infused aria with an air of drunken panache, accompanied very precisely by the orchestra. 3. Dance of the Polovtsian Maidens: An orchestral piece, fast and furious, some fine playing from... Read review
