The Fall were back less than a year after their debut with a new line-up and a new album. Dragnet was the follow up to Live At The Witch Trials and Burns, Bramah and Pawlett had all split the scene. Remaining musician(?) Marc Riley had switched to guitar and keyboards and Steve Hanley (bass) and Craig Scanlon (guitar) had started their near twenty year Fall careers with the Rowche Rumble single. Mike Leigh had come in on drums but was to stay for only a year.
Dragnet was another astonishing collection, eclipsing Witch Trials and kicking off Smith's insistence on showcasing some badly recorded "experimental" material on each album with the scrappy Spectre Vs Rector. The spider stalking the butterfly on the cover set the scene nicely for an altogether dark and dangerously attractive piece of work...

Advantages: Ideal example of Miles' style at the time - funky and fun. Disadvantages: Not for everyone (but definitely worth a shot)
..., and he tells of how whites resented this. Regardless of the complicated history of Johnson - thrown fights, the suicide of his wife, conviction for violating a slavery law (a frame up, says Miles) - the music on this disc surely does him justice.
The Music
This disc gets the best of both worlds - it is typical Miles rock-jazz fusion from the period, but since it was a film score, it is infinitely more accessible than "Bitches Brew". It begins with rocky drums and a funky bass line. Michael Henderson is on fine form on the Fender bass throughout the album, as is John McLaughlin on electric guitar. The two combine with Bill Cobham's relentless drum beat to get a real groove to the first track - Miles waits through two minutes of the rhythm section before playing. When he does, it is unmistakable Miles - the short, screaming phrases...
