I bought this album as I'm quite a big Placebo fan and have enjoyed their past albums and so thought I'd enjoy this one too... however, I just didn't think it quite stood up to what this band have done before.
Brian Molko seems to be "the man" of Placebo as he writes a lot of the lyrics and also is lead vocal and guitar. When he was asked about why he had made this album and what the message was behind it he suggested it was about people who were trying to forget about the negatives and chose to focus on positives to 'choose to live' and when I have listened closely to the lyrics and tried to relate it to this theme i can see that the aim of this has worked out quite well. The album was released in Spring time this year and is available as a CD, DVD and to be downloaded on their website too.
The album contains 13 tracks and you can see that they are all rather 'interesting' titles of tracks: Kitty Litter Ashtray Heart Battle for the Sun For What It's Worth Devil in the Details Bright Lights Speak in Tongues The Never Ending Why Julien Happy You're Gone Breath Under water Come Undone Kings of Medicine
I think to have the songs as a background 'noise' whilst you're busy doing something there's nothing to fall out about. They're up-tempo, they're good tracks but when you listen really closely I just find myself getting irritated by them! If anything they're pretty irritating because they're quite repetitive and i ended up playing 'sport the repitition' which seems to occur in a lot of their songs and not just the odd one. There are some clever lyrics though, below are a few:
"Time will help you grow but it doesn't have the time..." from Never Ending Why.
"Stupid me for thinking I could depend on stupid you...for they were drowned in southern comfort...." From Kings of Medicine.
I do enjoy listening to this album but it's not one which I can have on constantly, I do need a break from it and I have to make sure it is more of a background thing and not on for me to analyse the lyrics to too much! I do often wonder where the titles for their tracks come from though especially as 'Kitty Litter' is nothing to do with kitty litter itself! I prefer Placebo's other albums but I would still recommend this if you like their style of music.
The album cover I like the fact that the album cover represents what the band's aim for this album was- people turning from the darkness. The album picture is made to look like an eclipse which represents a moment of darkness then leading to the bright sunshine once more. It's a very simple picture with the moon blockingo ut the sun and the sun's rays still managing to radiate around it showing that it's got strength. I like the fact it relates to the story behind the album instead of with many other albums which have random art work as their covers and don't appear to relate to it at all!
The album is available from all music stores and online stores including amazon and play and is priced from £6.99-£9.99 depending on how you purchase it (6.99 is from Amazon as an MP3 download).

Placebo's sixth record, and their first full studio album with new drummer Steve Forrest ... more
is heavier than more recent efforts, and recalls the band's original harder sound. However, there are more complex string arrangements, as well as trumpets and sax...
Advantages: There are a couple of good songs, I guess.... Disadvantages: Lots of rubbish, tries too hard to be interesting, lacks the supposed positive attitude...
Advantages: There are a couple of good songs and promise for others... Disadvantages: Just too many bland tracks to be a good album; repetitive and altogether dull
