Advantages: Superb opening & introduction to the new BSG, excellent cast Disadvantages: Not the most lavishly presented product
Like most people, I remember BattlestarGalactica as a somewhat cheesy 1970's slice of TV sci-fi. Even though I'm a sci-fi nut, I didn't really get in to BSG at the time finding it pretty poor fodder when Star Wars was all the rage.
Fast forward and one Ronald D Moore who worked on much of the recentish Star Trek stuff i.e. Next Gen onwards, started to think about a re-imagined version of BSG. That's his words, not mine. If I ever use abuses of the English language like 're-imagined' of my own volition, feel free to shoot me. I wish Ciao had a spell checker though..
The mini series starts with a lone human arriving on a space station in neutral territory. The human/Cylon war from the original BSG has long since ended and we are told that every year a human and a Cyclon delegate are supposed to meet on this space station to discuss ...
Advantages: A good introduction to the new series Disadvantages: No DVD extras
This DVD holds the start of the new BattlestarGalactica series - the TV mini series that caused considerable controversy by re-writing ace pilot Starbuck as a woman.
Covered here is the start of the space adventure, with Baltar's collaboration with Caprica Six bringing down the defenses and allowing the Cylons to destroy the Twelve Colonies of Kobol.
The only warship to survive the first battle is the ancient BattlestarGalactica, operational during the first Cyclon war and so without the computer networks that made the new fleet so vulnerable.
Captain Adama and newly sworn in President Roslin take on the task of protecting the civilian survivors and take them out among the stars in an attempt to avoid annihilation.
As special effects etc have moved on considerably since the first BattlestarGalactica was made, you are ...
Advantages: Nostalgia glory, vipers, cylons space battles! Disadvantages: Not much
An avid fan of BattlestarGalactica, I watched the movie version way back in the 70's - remembering how my mum thought it was too loud, but as a kid I loved it!
Never really caught the TV series when it was first broadcast, as this was intermittent and patchy at best. Managed however to catch some/all the episodes in the mid 80's. Even so the shows even then were very watchable.
Yes the show has undergone a recent "re-imagination" - and in my opinion a very good "re-imagination", this show in this boxset was right for the time - the remake is right for the 21st century.
As sci-fi goes, this was attempting to be a little darker and more edgy for its day (a brave move), to its more contemporary stable mate of Star Wars. The story is familiar to all who know sci-fi, mankind has been wiped out and the last of humanity is on the run ...
