Be Your Own PET hail from Nashville, America, a place not really synonymous with producing good punk rock music… until now. The band consists of Jemina Pearl, Jonas Stein, Nathan Varquez and Jamin Orall, a group of 18-19 year olds writing about destruction ('Bicycle, Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle'), robbing banks ('October, First Account'), disagreements with boyfriends that end in murder ('Bog'), and you know, the dead taking over the earth ('Ouch').
The whole album rarely changes pace and the band manage to churn out 15 songs in the space of 33 minutes, (the longest track, 'Ouch' is just over three minutes long.) By the end of the album you feel absolutely exhausted, and even after listening to it another six times the effect is still there! However, even though you become used to the fast songs, the band surprise you by putting in slower tracks such as 'October, First Account' and 'Ouch', which let you have a rest before they speed up the pace again.
Front woman Jemina Pearl may look like the traditional cute, blonde, all American girl, but this view of her completely changes when she starts singing. Jemina screams out the lyrics as if her life depended on it, and as shown in the opening lyrics to 'Bunk Trunk Skunk' ('I'm an independent mother****** and I'm here to take your money'), it's most definitely not all sweet and innocent. However, if this hasn't completely changed your view, take a listen to 'Bog' ('I want a kitty cat my boyfriend wants a dog, we got into a fight, I drowned him in the bog').
I know that in reviews of albums the phrase 'This is like nothing you'll have ever heard before', tends to be overused. However, with this album, I mean it in all sincerity. It's refreshing to have a band that isn't trying to emulate any particular style. Be Your Own PET, are instead just being themselves, four teenagers who want to make punk music, and just generally have fun.
Finally, this album is not going to be to everyone's taste, and for some it may take a while to get used to the style. However, if you are a fan of punk rock music, I'd strongly advise that you give it a listen.
