Advantages: Some funny moments Disadvantages: I did feel a bit sick
Controversially banned for 25 years when it was first released in 1975 The Beast is an erotic reworking of the Beauty and The Beast tale, released in November 2001 in a full uncut and subtitled version of the French original.
My overall opinion: messy, and curious, and well strange, onto the review:
The film opens with a rather bizarre, extraordinary close-up and intimate scene of two horses having sex, in the courtyard of a very large chateau looked on and assisted by a number of men, one of whom is Mathurin, the son of the brother of the Duke De Comte (forgive me if this is incorrect - but the familial relationships in the film weren't that clear)
In the chateau there are two rather bitchy old men, the Duke and his brother (Mathurin's father) who are trying to contact the Cardinal in Rome (who is the Duke's brother) to come ...

Advantages: Ben Kingsley Disadvantages: Everything else
I'm pretty sure that Ben Kingsley's terrifying performance means that he's the beast of the show, but as to who the sexy one is? Hmm, I must be missing something here.
It's not like I could fail to notice Ray Winstone tanning in a pair of yellow Speedos in the opening scene -- it's just that he doesn't do anything for me.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Sexy Beast (even if that does sound a little wrong), but if I was forced to distinguish the influence it had upon me by expressing my deepest emotions in the form of a love poem, or simply adding another notch to my bedpost, it would have to be the latter.
In other words: Sexy Beast is good for filling a cheeky hour or so, but it's hardly a film that has such a profound effect upon you that you will remember it for the rest of your life. In some ...

Advantages: Phenomenal performance from Ben Kingsley, great script and stylish Disadvantages: Second half isn't as good as the first, gets a bit boring when Kingsley's not on screen
only describe as exhilarating.
The second half isn't as good as the first, the scenes without Ben Kingsley are nowhere near as good as those with, and it's ultimately a bit meaningless, but Sexy Beast is a very good film. Explosive, stylish, and more intelligent than you might expect, Jonathan Glazer's debut film marks him out as somebody to watch. Saying that, I think he made Birth, which I thought looked pretty bad, and about as different to this as you could imagine, but let's not detract from this achievement, eh?
By the way, Ciao's classing of this under "comedy" is baffling - Sexy Beast isn't funny in the slightest!
I'm reviewing the film only, not the DVD. The cheapest I could find Sexy Beast on the internet is from www.ddhe.co.uk for £7.99, but it seems quite hard to ...
