...nostalgic mood in the air. Man i love this song, if i were to draw up a list of my favourite Denny tunes this would rank high up as far as her solo backlog goes.

A quaint yet melancholic opening set of piano keys open for Denny here, the complete change of style and conception from Denny's musical direction is quite surprising, the album is very varied in style. Advantages: Glorious music, sounds like nothing else in the world. Disadvantages: Too much narrating; not long enough.

Opener “Melody” starts with a simple combination of guitar, bass and drums, with Gainsbourg narrating. In truth the narrating spoils it: all you want to do is listen to the music. The guitar and bass parts are amazing; they cover an astonishing variety of tones and textures, and they are both (cursed word!) “melodic”, and incredibly detailed. The song builds to a huge orchestral climax. But never on this album is the orchestra part obtrusive. It’s always light and floaty, soaring over the rest of the music, and compliments it perfectly.
“Ballade de Melody Nelson” follows. This is a beautiful track, with a lovely finger-picked acoustic guitar and a gorgeous chord progression. The same goes for “...

Advantages: A step back in time. Disadvantages: Not known enough today.
...she left was part of British Folk history at its' best, and although she may be no longer with us, her voice lives on, to entertain and haunt perhaps with memories. This album is Sandy Denny as good as it gets, rare work, now available to those that missed the opportunity to take a step back in time.
