Prompted by the early 1973 release of an unauthorised set in the US, like its twin, the 'blue' album, this has acquired a place in the Beatles catalogue out of all proportion to its importance, as for many years it was more or less the only way of acquiring the A-sides of the 1962-66 singles on one (double) album, from "Love Me Do" to the double A-side "Yellow Submarine"/"Eleanor Rigby".. A few additional tracks were added like "Eight Days a Week", "In My Life" and "Norwegian Wood". Even so, this remains the least essential of the Fab Four compilations that has survived from the vinyl era to CD. 26 tracks (several less than two minutes long) on two CDs, with a combined playing time of just over an hour, could have easily fitted onto one CD with plenty of room to spare for additional numbers, and it's poor value for money. If you're a Beatles completist who must have everything, fair enough. Otherwise, put this at the bottom of your essential list. You'd do better to consider the two "Past Masters" sets instead.
