There have been an absolute deluge of compilation albums by the Beatles over the years and their catalogue has been raided and repackaged time and time again and it's usually in the interests of the suits making money for nothing. In my honest opinion, all the various reissues are irrelevant - if you're not going to buy the albums the band issued while they were still around, then there's only two compilations that really make any sense. There's this one, 1967-70 (The Blue Album) and its companion 1962-66 (The Red Album).
You've got pretty sparse packaging with an original shot of the band from the early 60's on the back and a late 60's reshoot on the front. These are reversed for the earlier compilation, i.e. you get the early shot on the cover. The record bag inside the sleeve on the LP includes lyrics for all the tracks. I guess with the CD version, you'd get them as a booklet, but I have to admit I've only ever seen the vinyl version.
With the lack of hype in the packaging and the understated presentation, the album stands or falls on the music alone, which is how it should be. As this album includes some of the greatest songs ever written, then there's certainly no problems on that front.
The tracks are all either singles or well known songs and the material is drawn from Sergeant Pepper, the White Album, Abbey Road and Let It Be. Stand outs for me are the tracks by Harrison (Something, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, though I didn't like Here Comes The Sun), but everything on here is pretty damn near indispensable. The other biggie is Day In The Life from Pepper.
If you're going to buy any Fab Four compilation, stick to these two double albums - nothing else makes any sense.
