I wanted to write about an album i haven't listened to that many times, so i looked into my parents CD collection and decided to pick up the blue album.
-Cover- Large picture on the front cover of the band, if you look at the red album (1962-1966), the picture is the same but it was taken when they were younger. It's a double album, with 28 tracks altogether. Inside contains booklet with all the lyrics, and several pictures taken between 1967-1970.
-Tracks- CD1. 1. Strawberry Fields Forever The intro is instantly recognised. I don't know much about Lennon and McCartneys writing style, but i strongly believe they were on drugs when they written alot of their stuff. Throughout the song, the beat gets quicker, then it would slow down through the verse, then speed up for the chorus. It's like it's building up to something. And whatever it is, you know it's going to be good.
2. Penny Lane Written about a road in Liverpool, Penny Lane is quite an upbeat song. Basically, its an observation of whats going on around them.
3. St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Another weird one, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is introduced and they say a few words, then its announced they are going to sing...
4. With A Little Help From My Friends ...Everyone knows this, partly because of the terrible cover by Pop Idol rejects Sam and Mark.
John and George would be turning in their graves. Anyway. This song is bascially saying, friends are always there for you.
5. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds This was definitely influenced by drugs. "Picture yourself in a boat on a river with tangerine trees and marmalade skies, Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, a girl with kaleidoscope eyes" Weirdly wonderful lyrics and yet another hit.
6. A Day In The Life A personal favourite here. The song progresses from slow, to upbeat, back to slow. Not forgetting the build ups of different instruments and sounds.
7. All You Need Is Love Another one that everyone knows. And, it's pretty self explainitory. All you need is love.
8. I Am The Walrus This has to be my favourite on this album. Lennon provides the vocals on this amazing song, and the lyrics could not have been written by anyone less than a genius.
9. Hello, Goodbye Short and sweet. It's a catchy one, with unusually simple lyrics. I think, all he's trying to say is, i say one thing, you say the opposite.
10. The Fool On The Hill Quite a slow number, as the title explains, it's about the fool on the hill, but i'm not quite sure who the fool is.
11. Magical Mystery Tour This fast, catchy hit consists of the repition of the same lyrics, "Roll up, roll up for the mystery tour". Yet it still sounds great. Nobody else could pull it off.
12. Lady Madonna A really catchy song written about a hooker. "Lady Madonna, children at your feet, wonder how you manage to make ends meet" This is just another hit which never bores you.
13. Hey Jude Everyone knows it. It's one of those songs you have to sing along to. It's a classic.
14. Revolution This comes across as an anthem for protesters and people who wanted to make a difference... It's got a blues feel to it, it's great.
CD2. 1. Back In The U.S.S.R It's another upbeat, bluesy type song, i wasn't really familiar with this one until now.
2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps One of George's beautiful songs. It's got one of those melodies that you recognise after only hearing a few notes.
3. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Another unfamiliar track, but it sounds like one of those songs that at parties, everyone knows the words and are singing along at the top of their voice.
4. Get Back This has got a blues theme to it, it's got a beat you just have to tap your foot to. I didn't recognise this song either, but i'd heard the name somewhere.
5. Don't Let Me Down This is a really nice, laid back track and it's easy listening. It's basically asking his loved one to not let him down, their love will last forever.
6. The Ballad Of John and Yoko Another blues style track, it's quite funny this song, it makes me laugh a little. The lyrics are simple and quite witty.
7. Old Brown Shoe Another track by George, he'd wrote this song about being in love, i'm guessing.
8. Here Comes The Sun A classic by Mr. Harrison. Everyone knows this summery number. It's nice to listen to when its summer, even though we never get the sun.
9. Come Together I love this song. It's got a good beat, and you can sing along with the chorus. It's quite a feel-good song.
10. Something Another hit from George written about his lover. It's beautifully written.
11.Octopus's Garden Another mad song about being under the sea in an octopus's garden. There's something romantic about it, in a weird sort of way.
12. Let It Be This is an emotional song, it could make me cry. Easily. I love it, after all the different styles of songs on the double album, they write this amazing song.
13. Across The Universe This is also a track i wasn't so familiar with, but it deserves to be among the more famous hits. It's a very well written song.
14. The Long And Winding Road Another Beatle's hit which has been copied by Pop Idol contestants, but this time it was Will and Gareth. They could never do it justice. Nobody covering The Beatles could never match the original.
-Summary- When people think of The Beatles, they think Help! or Yellow Submarine. But, there is so much more to the four lads from Liverpool. This album proves it. Someone who is my age and hasn't really heard much of The Beatles, would only know a few of the tracks off the double album. I totally recommend it to anyone who think The Beatles were overrated.

Nice review! Michael Jackson makes most of the money when these are released, though the beatles do get a lot of royalties too. --Chris--

Great to see yet another generation reviewing The Beatles. I can remember my mum saying well they won't last, lot of rubbish, here today, gone tomorrow, that sort of thing, here they are, 40years later, and most people know some of their songs. Lucy in the Sky came out a year after my daughter was born and named Lucy, a classic old fashioned name and quite rare, but a year later, the third most po;ular girls name around. good read, Sue :o)
