misspent our youth murdering it, but this greatest of English pianists effortlessly manages to do so. And with the equally hackneyed "Moonlight" he works a similar miracle: taking the numinous opening movement at a perfectly judged pace, speeding the third movement like the wind and bringing out the middle movement's dramatic contrast between its soprano theme and crashing bass reply. But the real fascination of this record--made in the early 1950s, and satisfyingly remastered--lies in the less familiar sonatas which accompany these household favourites. Those who regard the bare-octave first movement of Op.10 No.3 as trivial should listen to what Solomon does with it: he handles its technically simple material with such affectionate care that every note acquires significance. In his hands the second-movement lament--so often the occasion for mawkishness--builds to its massive climax, then dies away to silence, like a great wave passing over us. Solomon presents the last movement's wayward changes of direction as the most marvellously sustained train of thought: an effect he pulls off again with the throwaway magic of Op.27 No.1. --Michael Church

Advantages: dynamic and gripping Disadvantages: none
...Fantastic to have another additional collection of all five of Beethoven's piano concerti. Spanning his life we can really get to grips with his evolving use of the orchestra in these works. From the Third's action packed finale to the Fourth's beautiful expressions to the grandeur of the much loved Fifth.
The playing is precise, dramatic and full of energy; as indeed it should be.
Aimard's playing is always well crafted and beautifully shaped. This is an insightful disk and has taken the musicians an awful lot of hard work. A must-have for any lover of Beethoven's piano music. If you usually go for his chamber music or string quartets why not branch out and explore Aimard's wonderful take on these concerti? Well worth buying and indeed an inspiration for myself and other pianists alike....
