Since the "Hammerklavier" was Beethoven's greatest keyboard work, since Solomon was the ... more
greatest British pianist ever, and since this CD contains three of his superb recordings remastered from the early 1950s, there are strong arguments for buying it while it's available. Very few women pianists have attempted the "Hammerklavier": Solomon's power-packed version makes clear why that is. Yet his touch in the first movement is light, almost dainty: forswearing all declamatoriness, he simply follows the music's urgent drive. The scherzo, by contrast, is unusually aggressive, leading into a massive adagio which unfolds without a trace of Romantic mist. Stravinsky's description of the closing movement as "contemporary forever" is amply justified here, as Solomon opens and shuts the thematic windows one by one before launching into the rollercoaster fugue. Meanwhile his handling of the other sonatas on this record is no less riveting. If he takes the gaunt first movement of the Op.90 sonata more slowly than pianists do today, he also infuses it with more poetry; there is no wallowing in the second movement's sweetness, which is all animated warmth. And in the exquisite "Les Adieux" sonata (Op.81a) he eschews the pedal in favour of crystalline clarity: you feel at every point that his is the definitive way to play it. --Michael Church

Advantages: dynamic and gripping Disadvantages: none
Fantastic to have another additional collection of all five of Beethoven's piano concerti. Spanning his life we can really get to grips with his evolving use of the orchestra in these works. From the Third's action packed finale to the Fourth's beautiful expressions to the grandeur of the much loved Fifth.
The playing is precise, dramatic and full of energy; as indeed it should be.
Aimard's playing is always well crafted and beautifully shaped. This is an insightful disk and has taken the musicians an awful lot of hard work. A must-have for any lover of Beethoven's piano music. If you usually go for his chamber music or string quartets why not branch out and explore Aimard's wonderful take on these concerti? Well worth buying and indeed an inspiration for myself and other pianists alike. ...
Advantages: Excellent physcological study of character. Disadvantages: Grim, brutal, shocking scenes of a sexual nature.
Haneke is well known for implementing the shock element into his films. He likes to leave his audience felling unsettled. Cinematography is brilliant with subdued colouring reflecting the drabness of Ericas life, and the greyness of the storyline. I have watched this film a few times now, and with each viewing I am stunned by the perfection of Isabelle Hupperts performance. Annie Girardot as the mother also gives a strong, convincing performance with the elements of smothering, and control in the right balance.
In my opinion, I think this is a great film. It won many awards, and well deserved accolades. The Piano teacher has a very basic storyline, contains subtitles, and is very graphic in it's content, so it will not be to everyones taste. The musical score is brilliant throughout with the of sonatas Schuman, Schubert Bach ...

Eternal Sonata PS3
I finally got my hands on a copy of this game. Even though it was released on Xbox 360 back in 2007 before PS3's release which was the beginning of 2009.
Found it to be a colourful world between reality and fantasy and based around the famous composer Frederic Chopin just before he dies from Tuberculosis at
the age of 39, even though Chopin looks about 18 in the game to be honest. Its very child like game with no scenes of blood or swearing. Has an easy tutorial
section at the beginning of the game so you can learn what functions to use and how easy to use with the joypad. You get to meet various people and how they
play apart in Chopins dream world and become apart of his companies in his dreamworld.
