Splicing Alpha with Omega, Beethoven's first sonata with his last, this series of ... more
recordings by the greatest British pianist of the 20th century gets off to a magnificent start. And from the rocketing figure onwards which launches No.1, Solomon demonstrates perfect sympathy with the composer's intention. Beethoven's debt to his mentor Haydn is clear, but so is his assertion of independence: the opening movement impatiently blows away all trace of politesse. Solomon's hard-driving way with this allows him a lovely gear-change for the slow movement, where the sound purrs tenderly. And after the restrained deliberation of the ensuing minuet and trio, he finally lets rip with the last. The second of these early works is here turned into rich patchwork of tonal contrasts: only Brendel, among contemporary pianists, comes close to this. Cruelty and balm alternate in the first movement, which ends in some startling juxtapositions of heavily pedalled low passages and preternaturally bright high ones. The scherzo comes across as just that--a joke, with daintiness and slamming fury cheek by jowl. The mysterious opening of the final sonata has none of the usual portentousness: this serves to heighten the furious grandeur of the ensuing allegro. The concluding theme and variations are marked by a ringing plangency; Solomon makes the perfect pilot for their trilling ascent to the heavens, and subsequent return to earth. --Michael Church

Advantages: dynamic and gripping Disadvantages: none
Fantastic to have another additional collection of all five of Beethoven's piano concerti. Spanning his life we can really get to grips with his evolving use of the orchestra in these works. From the Third's action packed finale to the Fourth's beautiful expressions to the grandeur of the much loved Fifth.
The playing is precise, dramatic and full of energy; as indeed it should be.
Aimard's playing is always well crafted and beautifully shaped. This is an insightful disk and has taken the musicians an awful lot of hard work. A must-have for any lover of Beethoven's piano music. If you usually go for his chamber music or string quartets why not branch out and explore Aimard's wonderful take on these concerti? Well worth buying and indeed an inspiration for myself and other pianists alike. ...
Advantages: A good mix of songs Disadvantages: Doesnt help you get through the housework
A cd thats a couple of years old now but still fun to listen to.
I mean this cd says its meant to help you through the housework but I personally dont think it really does,if anything it distracts you, because you just start singing along to all the great tracks this album has to offer, you get caught up in the music and completely lose track of what you were doing - maybe a good thing in a way :-)
Housework vol1 is a double album that has some cracking songs that you just dont seem to hear on the radio anymore such as The Beach Boys - Help Me Rhonda and Don McLeans - American Pie.
The songs on this album just make you feel good and really help to lift your spirits, but I honestly think its marketed wrong, this is a feel good album for anyone just not people doing the housework.I dont think the title of the album really represents ...
Advantages: Excellent physcological study of character. Disadvantages: Grim, brutal, shocking scenes of a sexual nature.
Haneke is well known for implementing the shock element into his films. He likes to leave his audience felling unsettled. Cinematography is brilliant with subdued colouring reflecting the drabness of Ericas life, and the greyness of the storyline. I have watched this film a few times now, and with each viewing I am stunned by the perfection of Isabelle Hupperts performance. Annie Girardot as the mother also gives a strong, convincing performance with the elements of smothering, and control in the right balance.
In my opinion, I think this is a great film. It won many awards, and well deserved accolades. The Piano teacher has a very basic storyline, contains subtitles, and is very graphic in it's content, so it will not be to everyones taste. The musical score is brilliant throughout with the of sonatas Schuman, Schubert Bach ...
