May I have this dance?

Advantages: One of Beethoven's finest symphonies.
Disadvantages: None from me, but some will say "classical music is boring".

THE END OF AN ERA

1812 can be seen as the markerpoint where Beethoven's middle-period came to an end and his late-period was ushered in. Beethoven's middle-period saw the composer at his most creative high with one masterpiece following the other in rapid succession. The beginning of this period can roughly be timed as starting in 1803 with the appearance of the Third Symphony "Eroica" and the "Kreutzer" sonata. ...
...Classicism of Haydn and Mozart behind him and taking on a completely new and individual voice. This individuality became more and more apparent in the works that followed: the "Waldstein" and "Appassionata" piano sonatas, the "Razumovski" quartets, the Violin Concerto, the three last cello sonatas, the "Archduke" piano trio, Fidelio, the Fifth and Sixth symphonies, the Fourth and Fifth Piano Concertos, to name ... more

'Classical genius for the classically untrained'

Advantages: Classical music of the highest order providing 'Where have I heard this before?' entertainment.
Disadvantages: A pathetic excuse to release classical genius, along with poor album art and information.

? Unfortunately, the whole idea behind this album was to show how great classical works inspire hundreds of pop hits centuries after they were composed. For instance, Beethoven's 'Symphony No. 5 "Fate" 1st Movement' is cited as inspiring the Beatles' 'Roll Over Beethoven' and Faure's 'Pavane' inspiration for S Club 7's 'Natural'. However, it is difficult to see how such works relate to modern pop (from Pachelbel to Kylie?!?) and I suggest ignoring this concept altogether. Summary? If you fancy broadening your cultural horizons with classical music, this album is a great place to start. Even if you cannot see pure genius within each composition, you are still guaranteed to enjoy the album simply because you recognise each track from everyday life. This is a must for classical fanatics and newcomers alike. Kev ...

Beethoven's symphonies: the rediscovered frontier

Advantages: A new way to hear Beethoven
Disadvantages: Surpassed by some later period cycles

played and the Finale brings a great sense of thankfulness from the country folk. This version makes for a nice breath of fresh air not apparent in many other Pastorals. There really is nothing more one needs to say. Symphony No.7 in A major, Op.92 The Seventh Symphony (my personal favorite among Beethoven's symphonies) receives a rather curious performance when it comes to this set. Whereas most of the other symphonies are quite fresh in inspiration, the Seventh seems to suffer from a lack of energy so important to this Beethoven's most rhythmic symphony. This is particularly noticeable in the Finale, where the tempo is surprisingly relaxed and particularly in the coda the excitement is practically killed off by this lack of energy. It could be that Norrington was still a little unsure of pulling it all out for this difficult work ...

Review of Beethoven Symphonies 1-9 (London Classical Players) - Sir Roger Norrington

Sinfonia Eroica

Advantages: A work that changed the way we look at symphonies
Disadvantages: none whatsoever

. When he was asked in 1817 to name his favourite symphony, Beethoven responded the Eroica (however that was when the Ninth was still to be written). Out of all Beethoven's symphonies, only No.9 is longer that the Eroica, and none (except perhaps No.7) is more boisterously heroic and optimistically forceful in it's overall message. Beethoven would evolve further from the Eroica, of course, but the importance of the work cannot be underestimated. It really opened the doors for the more extended symphonies like Schubert's "Great C major" or the symphonies of the Romantics following Beethoven's death. A magnificent work that continues to amaze! The symphony is scored for: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 3 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings. © berlioz ...
