Advantages: Great fireworks! Disadvantages: Have to get a spot early!
NewYearsEve, I decided to change my life and take a round the world trip all based around being in Australia for Christmas and new-year.
I saved hard for 8 months and finally decided to take the plunge, I left in November for LA then New Zealand and I finally arrived in Australia on the 18th December 2008. After having a surprisingly good Christmas day on Bondi Beach the pressure of the NewYears celebrations started to build.
Everyone in the hostel was talking about where to go to get a great view and the general consensus was to get a spot as early as possible and wait all day for the fireworks. This was my plan until one of my new friends suggested a Harbour Cruise.
I assumed that it would be far too expensive but was pleasantly surprised when we found a company with tickets left at just $180 AUD = £80 ...
Advantages: None that I can think of Disadvantages: Embarressing, awful food, too crowded, dagerous driving
MAORI HANGI EVENING IN ROTORURA:
We were in two minds as to whether to do this trip or not but as our time inNew Zealand was limited and this seemed to be the only opportunity to learn about the Maori culture and experience a real hangi we decided that we would pay the price and take the trip. To see what we could learn about the Maori people.
I had eaten hangi meals in Australia when I lived there and really enjoyed the experience of food cooked in fire pits. So I persuaded my other half to come on the trip despite the fact tha we usually avoid forced ?meet the native? experiences.
THE COLLECTION:
The bus with a Maori lady driver collected us at 7pm from our hotel. She insisted that we called the bus a waka which is Maori for any form of transport. The guide /driver was a total nutter and spent half the time gesturing with one hand ...
Advantages: Brilliant. Fun. Evocative. A celebration of age and life. Disadvantages: None. That is, unless you don't appreciate brilliant acoustic folk music. Rap fans forget it...
It's a rare thing when you can go home again... The Seekers are a too often underrecognised force in pop music. Supremely talented and driven by the transcendent voice of Judith Durham, they miraculously reunite after 25 years and, get this, are better than ever. Age and perspective brings a subtle maturity and irony to their voices and presentation. Each is gifted in his/her own right and together they create a unique and yes, magical chemistry that defies time and trends. The songs are performed with a passionate affection and respect for the original arrangements and memories. As a special treat, check out their studio album from the late 90s, "Future Road." Sublime in my humble opinion. A welcome relief of harmony, melody and acoustic layers from the synthesized, shallow garbage that pervades pop culture today. ...
