'Wide Sargasso Sea'
By
Jean Rhys
(With thanks to Charlotte Bronte)
I realised that in several recent book reviews about sequels to classic books, I had mentioned this book, 'The Wide Sargasso Sea'.
This is actually a prequel rather than a sequel. It is a prequel to Charlotte Bronte's immortal 'Jane Eyre'.
So I dug out my copy and reread the book to be able to write a review on it with fresh eyes.
Jean Rhys was a Creole writer
But just what is a 'Creole'?
Creole is the name given to a European who was born or lived in the West Indies; while they were educated to think of England as "home," they were also racially marked and excluded as inferior colonials. Advantages: Brilliant chill out album, loads of influences and instruments Disadvantages: There isn't a track that stands outabove the rest.
Gruff Rhys ? Candylion
Well, who on earth is Gruff Rhys? As you have probably guessed he is Welsh and was born in Haverfordwest (or Hwlffordd) in Wales in 1970. He is most famous for being the vocalist and guitarist from the Super Furry Animals who were at the forefront of the Welsh invasion of mainstream music back in the 1990?s. Super Furry Animals are best known for songs such as ?Something 4 the Weekend?, ?Juxtaposed with You? and ?Northern Lites?.

?Candylion ...
Advantages: Some funny parts, the supporting cast, not too technical Disadvantages: A bit laddish, not enough on the places visited

It's another in the long line of humorous travelogues borne from a challenge or lifelong dream. This time the dream belongs to writer and comedian Griff Rhys Jones, whose idea it was to take his boat across the North Sea, through the Kiel Canal and across the Baltic Sea to St Petersburg in Russia.
It must be said at this point that Griff does have years of sailing experience having inherited the bug from his father so this wasn't totally a flight of fancy. However, so many disasters beset the voyage and the preparation was so poor that you have to wonder just how much Griff really does know about sailing. Still, the various failings ...
