Advantages: A unique, fresh voice. Handsome guy. Will be around for a long time.
Disadvantages: His first effort is not bad and subsequent CD's get better.

...After the release of The Voice, Classic FM refused to give it airplay. Was it because it was too radical? How can one mix opera and popular music in one CD? And who was Russell Watson, anyway? Fans protested, Classic FM changed its mind and played what the people wanted to hear, and Russell Watson ended up winning at The Classical Brit Awards that year, and the kudos have not stopped. The Voice is a mix of arias and popular music covers. The choice of songs gives us a chance to see what The Voice can do - and it does it well. Although I don't like how he sings rock and roll, the versitility of Russell Watson's voice is obvious. There are three duets on the CD - Saylon Dola with Marie Brennan, Someone Like You with Cleopatra Higgins, and Barcelona with Shaun Ryder. Where Watson really shines is on tracks such as Nessun Dorma... Read review

Advantages: A great tribute to the adventure scores of the 1930's.
Disadvantages: The constant action and too loyal a following of the Williams tradition can deter some people

The Golden Age of Mezzo Soprani Continues

Advantages: Susan Graham sings nearly everything

...The American mezzo-soprano opera singer Susan Graham is in high demand at all the major opera houses of the world. This CD is a good introduction to this talented singer and her wide ranging repertoire (from the hard core operas by Haendel, Gluck, Mozart, and Berlioz to the light operettas of Yvain and Messager to the contemporary songs of Ned Rorem and Jake Heggie). Due to her strong voice and imposing physique (standing 5'10'' tall), Ms Graham is particularly successful in the 'trouser roles' where the female singer plays a male part on stage (tracks 1-6 features arias sung by 2 of her best known trouser parts). Her voice is a light lyric high mezzo soprano with effortless high notes. It is radiant, clear, and rather lighter than what one would expect from a typical mezzo (similar to Anne-Sofie von Otter's and Magda Kozena... Read review
