ARIA
Review of GayMega Productions - Aria by  Annochie

Advantages: Great Opera with Techno
Disadvantages: Miss the orchestra

...I was recently in a local music outlet here in the Los Angeles,CA area where I heard the sounds of angelic angels playing through their speaker system. When I asked about the music I was told it was an accompliation called ARIA. I asked if they had another copy of this unusual accompliation. I was told, they had 2 more copies left. I then purchased the CD. I was surprised to find out the CD was produced by a company in West Hollywood, CA in conjunction with a British recording studio. The CD has 14 tracks, 3 tracks in english, 3 tracks in french, 3 tracks in german, 3 tracks in latin, and 2 tracks in italian. The whole CD are Aria's from the major Verdi Operetta's, but the twist is that the production company has the opera's set to new age and techno music, a far cry from the orchestral music we all love to here. The 2 women on the CD... Read review

Songs from Medieval Bavaria
Review of Orff: Carmina Burana (arr piano) by  Newfloridian

Advantages: A fine mixture of gothic, medieval and modern music and words. You will know some of the themes - it will repay study. This is a superb rendition.
Disadvantages: None

...with desire. Young men, young girls, rightly couple together”. “The girl without a lover does without any pleasure; she keeps the last watches of the night alone.” There next comes the second most well known aria from the work “In trutina mentis dubia”. Many sopranos (Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Barbra Streisand) have included this in their repertories. It is a song agonising over the choice between love and chastity. “Opposite courses hang in the balance of my wavering mind. Wanton love and chastity. But I choose what I see and bend my neck to the yoke – to the sweet yoke I submit” Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi The piece is rounded off with a triumphal full orchestral and chorus recapitulation of the wheel of Fortune motif. We hear at the end the desperate pleas “Fortune’s wheel turns: I am cut down and fall: another is raised... Read review

Orchestrating Music with Colourful Dialect
Review of Panorama - Colours of the Orchestra by  berlioz

Advantages: Great performances of popular favourites and some rare gems
Disadvantages: Barely none, with perhaps slight issues with sound.

.... As is appropriate, there is quite a lot of Berlioz included, for he is one of the greatest orchestrators that ever was and his music really defines what "colour" in music is. There are two selections from the "dramatic legend" La Damnation de Faust (a strange cantata-opera-symphony hybrid), beginning with the "Ballet de Sylphes," a light and fairy-like little waltz, giving ample proof that Berlioz could write music subtle as wind when he wanted to. The following "Menuet des feux follets" is likewise sweetly light, but features little surges of drama appropriate in a witches' sabbath, which allows the good humour of drunken dancing to sweep the section to a close. To cap off the sensitive Berlioz, there is the subtle and magical "Queen Mab Scherzo" from his "dramatic symphony" Roméo et Juliette that is filled with quicksilver movement, magical feeling...
